Delayed menstruation with light yellow discharge on the sanitary pad?
Hello doctor, I would like to ask about my girlfriend.
Her period was supposed to arrive on November 25, but it hasn't come by today, the 30th.
During this time, she has been experiencing ongoing gastrointestinal discomfort, and there is tenderness in her chest when pressed, although this has started to lessen since the 29th.
She also feels slight pain below her navel, and her vaginal discharge has been less than usual.
On the 29th, there was a slight yellowish stain on her pad.
Is this an indication of a health issue, or could she be pregnant? We have not taken a pregnancy test yet.
We had sexual intercourse from November 20 to November 22, always using condoms, but there was ejaculation inside.
Afterward, we checked the condom to ensure there were no tears, and there was no leakage when withdrawing.
What is the likelihood of pregnancy in this situation, or could this be a health issue?

When it comes to a delayed period and the possibility of pregnancy, there are several factors to consider. Your girlfriend's menstrual cycle is typically expected to be regular, and the fact that her period is now five days late can understandably cause concern. The symptoms you described, including gastrointestinal discomfort, breast tenderness, and changes in vaginal discharge, could be indicative of several things, including premenstrual syndrome (PMS), hormonal fluctuations, or even early signs of pregnancy.
1. Understanding the Delay: A delayed period can be caused by various factors, including stress, hormonal imbalances, changes in weight, illness, or lifestyle changes. Given that your girlfriend has experienced gastrointestinal issues and discomfort, it is possible that these factors could have contributed to her delayed menstruation. Stress and anxiety can significantly impact the menstrual cycle, leading to delays or irregularities.
2. Pregnancy Considerations: Since you mentioned that you had unprotected intercourse (even with a condom, if there was internal ejaculation), there is a possibility of pregnancy. While condoms are effective in preventing pregnancy, they are not 100% foolproof. The fact that you checked for any breakage and did not find any is reassuring, but it does not eliminate the risk entirely. Sperm can sometimes escape during withdrawal if not done carefully.
3. Symptoms Analysis: The symptoms your girlfriend is experiencing—such as breast tenderness and changes in discharge—can be associated with both PMS and early pregnancy. The yellowish discharge you noted could be a sign of ovulation, hormonal changes, or even an early sign of pregnancy. However, it is essential to note that changes in discharge can also indicate an infection or other health issues, especially if accompanied by discomfort.
4. Next Steps: The most straightforward way to determine if your girlfriend is pregnant is to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are designed to detect the hormone hCG, which is produced during pregnancy. It is advisable to wait a few days after the missed period for the most accurate result. If the test is negative and her period still does not arrive, it may be wise to consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation.
5. Health Issues: If your girlfriend continues to experience gastrointestinal discomfort, breast pain, or any other unusual symptoms, it would be prudent for her to see a doctor. Conditions such as ovarian cysts, hormonal imbalances, or infections can also cause similar symptoms and may require medical attention.
In summary, while there is a possibility of pregnancy given the circumstances, the delayed period could also be attributed to other health issues or lifestyle factors. It is essential to monitor her symptoms and take a pregnancy test to clarify the situation. If there are any concerns about her health or if symptoms persist, seeking medical advice is always the best course of action.
