Could I Still Be Pregnant? Irregular Periods and Testing - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Are you pregnant?

My last menstrual period was from October 25 to October 28.
The previous three cycles were approximately 14 days apart, and I have not had my period in November.
I had several instances of sexual intercourse, with the male partner practicing withdrawal (ejaculating after masturbation) without using a condom.
After my period was late, I took three home pregnancy tests by last Sunday (November 29), all of which showed negative results.
Last week, I visited a traditional Chinese medicine doctor who prescribed a seven-day course of medication, stating that my period would come after finishing the medication, but it still hasn't arrived.
Today, I went to see a Western medicine doctor, who also conducted a pregnancy test, which was negative as well.
An ultrasound and pelvic examination showed no issues.
The doctor prescribed a three-day course of medication to induce menstruation, stating that if my period does not arrive by December 12, I will need to take another pregnancy test.
I would like to know, in this situation, is there still a possibility that I could be pregnant?

Please cooperate with your doctor today.
If further pregnancy tests are needed, they will be conducted.
The final diagnosis will be determined by them.

Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing a delay in your menstrual cycle, which can be concerning, especially if you have had unprotected sexual intercourse. The fact that you have taken multiple home pregnancy tests and received negative results, along with a visit to a healthcare provider who confirmed the absence of pregnancy through ultrasound and internal examination, suggests that the likelihood of being pregnant is low. However, let's delve deeper into the factors that could contribute to your situation.

Irregular menstrual cycles can be caused by a variety of factors, including stress, hormonal imbalances, changes in weight, excessive exercise, or underlying health conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Since you mentioned that your previous cycles were approximately 14 days apart, the sudden change to a missed period could indicate a disruption in your hormonal balance.
The use of herbal medicine, as prescribed by your traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practitioner, may also influence your menstrual cycle. While some herbal remedies can help regulate periods, they may take time to show effects, and their efficacy can vary from person to person. It’s essential to communicate with your healthcare providers about any medications or supplements you are taking, as they can interact with each other and affect your body’s response.

Regarding the pregnancy tests, home pregnancy tests are generally reliable when used correctly, especially if taken after a missed period. However, false negatives can occur, particularly if the test is taken too early or if the urine is diluted. Since you have tested multiple times and received consistent negative results, it is less likely that you are pregnant, but not entirely impossible.
The recommendation from your healthcare provider to take medication to induce menstruation is a common approach when there is a significant delay. If your period does not arrive after taking the medication, further evaluation may be necessary. This could include additional blood tests to check hormone levels, such as beta-hCG, which is the hormone produced during pregnancy, or other assessments to rule out conditions that could be affecting your menstrual cycle.

In summary, while the chances of being pregnant seem low given the negative tests and medical evaluations, it is crucial to monitor your body and follow up with your healthcare provider if your period does not return after the medication. If you continue to experience irregular cycles or other symptoms, further investigation may be warranted to determine the underlying cause.
In the meantime, consider maintaining a healthy lifestyle, managing stress, and keeping track of your menstrual cycle to provide your healthcare provider with comprehensive information during your visits. If you have any further concerns or if your symptoms change, do not hesitate to seek medical advice.
