Pain in the lower left rib area?
Hello doctor, recently I have experienced slight pain when pressing on the area just below my left rib cage for about two to three days, but it has since subsided.
I had similar discomfort a while back, but I didn't pay much attention to it at the time.
It took a long time for it to occur again.
I’ve noticed that the area below my left rib cage protrudes slightly more than the right side, although it’s not very noticeable externally; it can only be felt by touch.
Could this be a tumor, or is it possibly related to exercise or poor posture? I'm not sure which specialist I should see, so I appreciate your guidance.

Dr. Zhang Ziyan reply Pulmonology
Hello, based on the symptom description, it is usually inflammation of the soft tissue near the ribs, and the likelihood of a tumor is low.
If you minimize stimulation and touch, the symptoms should improve.
If problems persist, you may visit a thoracic medicine outpatient clinic for examination, as per the attending physician's advice.

More Info
Hello! Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding the pain you are experiencing under your left rib. It's understandable to feel anxious about any new or recurring pain, especially when it involves such a sensitive area of the body.
Based on your description, there are several potential causes for the pain you are feeling under your left rib. These can range from musculoskeletal issues to more serious conditions. Here are some common causes:
1. Muscle Strain: One of the most common reasons for localized pain in the rib area is muscle strain. This can occur due to physical activities, poor posture, or even sudden movements. If you've been engaging in activities that involve twisting or lifting, this could be a likely cause.
2. Costochondritis: This is an inflammation of the cartilage that connects a rib to the sternum. It can cause sharp pain that may worsen with certain movements or pressure.
3. Rib Injury: If you have had any recent falls or accidents, it’s possible that you may have sustained a rib injury or fracture, even if it was minor.
4. Gastrointestinal Issues: Sometimes, pain in the rib area can be referred pain from gastrointestinal problems, such as gastritis, acid reflux, or even issues related to the spleen or pancreas.
5. Tumors or Cysts: While it is less common, any noticeable protrusion or lump in the area could potentially be a tumor or cyst. However, this is usually accompanied by other symptoms, such as significant pain, changes in appetite, or unexplained weight loss.
6. Postural Issues: Poor posture can lead to muscle imbalances and strain, which may manifest as pain in the rib area. If you spend long hours sitting or have a sedentary lifestyle, this could contribute to your discomfort.
Given that you mentioned the pain has been intermittent and has not persisted for long periods, it may be related to muscle strain or posture. However, if the pain persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, significant swelling, or changes in your overall health, it would be wise to seek medical attention.
When to Seek Help
You should consider seeing a healthcare professional if:
- The pain persists for more than a few days without improvement.
- You experience severe pain that interferes with your daily activities.
- There are any accompanying symptoms such as fever, difficulty breathing, or significant swelling.
- You notice any changes in your body, such as a new lump or protrusion that seems unusual.
Which Specialist to See
For rib pain, you may start by consulting a primary care physician. They can perform a physical examination and may refer you to a specialist if necessary. Depending on the findings, you might be referred to:
- An orthopedic specialist for musculoskeletal issues.
- A gastroenterologist if gastrointestinal problems are suspected.
- A physical therapist for posture and muscle-related concerns.
Conclusion
In summary, while your symptoms may be benign and related to muscle strain or posture, it’s essential to monitor your condition. If the pain persists or worsens, don’t hesitate to seek medical advice. Early intervention can help prevent potential complications and ensure that any underlying issues are addressed promptly. Take care, and I hope you find relief soon!
