Numbness in the fingers?
Hello.
I am the one who previously inquired about the comminuted fracture of the radial head and underwent general anesthesia for relaxation.
Currently, my ring finger and little finger still experience numbness; why is that? 2.
Does extracorporeal shock wave therapy promote bone growth?

Dr. Chen Yongxue reply Orthopedics
The numbness in your fourth and fifth fingers is likely related to the distribution of the ulnar nerve and should not be associated with a radial head fracture.
Please undergo an electromyography (EMG) test.
Thank you.

After undergoing surgery for a radial head fracture, experiencing numbness in the ring and little fingers can be concerning. This symptom may be attributed to several factors related to the surgical procedure and the healing process.
1. Nerve Injury or Compression: During surgery, there is a possibility of nerve injury or compression, particularly to the ulnar nerve, which innervates the ring and little fingers. The ulnar nerve runs along the inner side of the elbow and can be affected during surgical manipulation or due to swelling post-surgery. If the nerve was compressed or irritated during the procedure, it could lead to numbness or tingling sensations in the fingers. This type of nerve injury can take time to heal, and symptoms may gradually improve as swelling decreases and the nerve recovers.
2. Swelling and Inflammation: Post-surgical swelling is common and can contribute to nerve compression. The body's inflammatory response to surgery can lead to increased pressure in the surrounding tissues, which may affect nerve function. As the swelling subsides over time, you may notice an improvement in the numbness.
3. Positioning During Surgery: The position of your arm during the surgery can also play a role in nerve symptoms. If your arm was positioned in a way that placed stress on the ulnar nerve, it could lead to temporary numbness or tingling in the fingers.
4. Healing Process: Nerve regeneration is a slow process. If there was any damage to the nerve, it may take weeks to months for full sensation to return. In some cases, physical therapy may be recommended to help improve function and sensation in the affected fingers.
Regarding your second question about extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) promoting bone growth, there is some evidence to suggest that ESWT can be beneficial in certain contexts. ESWT is a non-invasive treatment that uses acoustic waves to stimulate healing in bones and soft tissues. It has been shown to promote angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels), enhance collagen production, and stimulate the activity of osteoblasts (bone-forming cells), which can aid in the healing of fractures.
However, the effectiveness of ESWT can vary depending on the type and location of the fracture, as well as the timing of the treatment. It is generally more effective in cases of non-union fractures or chronic conditions rather than acute fractures. If you are considering this treatment, it is essential to discuss it with your orthopedic surgeon or healthcare provider to determine if it is appropriate for your specific situation.
In summary, the numbness in your ring and little fingers after radial head fracture surgery could be due to nerve compression or injury, swelling, or the positioning of your arm during the procedure. It is crucial to monitor your symptoms and communicate with your healthcare provider about any persistent issues. Additionally, while ESWT may promote bone healing, its effectiveness can vary, and it should be discussed with your medical team to ensure it aligns with your recovery plan.

After a comminuted fracture of the radius, why is there no sensation, tingling, or numbness in the ulnar nerve post-surgery, but it starts to feel tingling and numbness after manual relaxation of the hand? Is it possible to perform an arthroscopy?
Dr. Shi Guozheng reply Orthopedics
Arthroscopy may not be very helpful; it might be worth considering a nerve conduction study to identify which nerve is problematic. After a radial head fracture, the radial nerve passes nearby, and it is less likely to affect the ulnar nerve.[Read More] Understanding Nerve Sensation Changes After Radial Head Fracture Surgery
