Regarding the issue of menstrual blood volume?

Hello Dr.
Lin, I would like to ask about my menstrual cycle.
December 8th was the first day of my period, but that evening after having ginger duck at a gathering, my menstrual flow decreased significantly to the point where I hardly needed to change my sanitary pad.
Today is the 11th, and I am still experiencing light spotting.
Should I consider this an abnormal situation? I feel off due to the low flow this time.
What should I do? Thank you for your help.

julia, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/12/11

Dr. Lin Manying reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Menstruation has recently decreased; first, we should rule out pregnancy issues (such as threatened miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy), so it is recommended to take a pregnancy test.
Sometimes food (like ginger duck) can also affect menstruation.

Understanding abnormal menstrual flow can be quite concerning, especially when changes occur unexpectedly. Based on your description, it seems that you experienced a significant alteration in your menstrual flow after consuming a meal, which is not typical. Here’s a breakdown of what you might be experiencing and when it’s advisable to seek medical attention.

Firstly, it’s important to recognize that menstrual cycles can be influenced by a variety of factors, including stress, diet, hormonal changes, and underlying health conditions. The fact that your menstrual flow decreased significantly after a specific meal could suggest a few possibilities. One potential explanation is that certain foods, particularly those that are spicy or rich in ginger (like ginger duck), can have a mild effect on blood circulation and may influence menstrual flow temporarily. However, this is not a common or well-documented phenomenon.

The duration of your menstrual period is also noteworthy. A typical menstrual cycle lasts between 3 to 7 days, and while some women may experience lighter days towards the end of their cycle, a flow that is described as "dripping" for an extended period could indicate an abnormality. If your menstrual flow is significantly lighter than usual and accompanied by other symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, or any unusual pain, it could be a sign of an underlying issue.

In terms of what constitutes abnormal menstrual flow, here are some key indicators:
1. Duration: If your period lasts longer than 7 days or is significantly shorter than your usual cycle.

2. Flow: If you experience a sudden change in the volume of blood, whether it’s heavier or lighter than normal.

3. Symptoms: Accompanying symptoms such as severe cramps, fatigue, dizziness, or any unusual discharge.

Given that you mentioned feeling "off" and experiencing a change in your menstrual flow, it would be prudent to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination, blood tests to check hormone levels, and possibly an ultrasound to rule out any structural issues in the reproductive system.

In summary, while occasional changes in menstrual flow can occur due to various benign factors, persistent or significant changes warrant a medical evaluation. It’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your health. If you feel that your symptoms are affecting your daily life or if you have any concerns, please reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice and treatment options. They can help determine the cause of your symptoms and guide you on the best course of action.
