Lower abdominal pain?
I recently had an abortion six days ago, and for the past two days, I've been experiencing lower abdominal pain that feels like cramping right after urinating.
I can't stand up straight, but sitting or lying down provides some relief, although the pain subsides quickly.
However, I feel pain every time I urinate (without any urge to hold it).
I would like to know if this is related to the procedure.

No, it may be urethritis or pelvic inflammatory disease; please return for an examination.

Experiencing lower abdominal pain after an abortion can be concerning, especially when it presents as cramping or discomfort during urination. It’s important to understand that various factors can contribute to such symptoms following a surgical procedure like an abortion.
Firstly, it's essential to recognize that the uterus undergoes significant changes during and after an abortion. The procedure can lead to temporary inflammation or irritation of the surrounding tissues, which may manifest as abdominal pain. This discomfort can sometimes feel like cramping, especially when the bladder fills and puts pressure on the pelvic area.
In your case, the pain occurring specifically after urination could suggest a few potential issues. One possibility is that the bladder or urethra may be irritated due to the proximity of the surgical site. The surgical procedure can sometimes lead to inflammation in the pelvic region, which may cause discomfort during urination. Additionally, if there was any trauma to the pelvic area during the procedure, it could also contribute to this sensation.
Another consideration is the possibility of a urinary tract infection (UTI). UTIs can develop after any surgical procedure, including an abortion, due to changes in normal flora or irritation of the urinary tract. Symptoms of a UTI often include pain during urination, increased frequency of urination, and sometimes lower abdominal pain. If you notice any additional symptoms such as fever, chills, or changes in urine color or odor, it would be prudent to seek medical attention.
Moreover, if the pain persists or worsens, it’s crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may recommend a urinalysis to check for signs of infection or other underlying issues. It’s also important to rule out any complications related to the abortion itself, such as retained products of conception, which can lead to ongoing pain and discomfort.
From a psychological perspective, it’s worth noting that anxiety and emotional stress can also manifest as physical symptoms, including abdominal pain. If you are feeling anxious about your health or the implications of the abortion, this could potentially exacerbate your physical symptoms. Engaging in relaxation techniques, counseling, or support groups may be beneficial in managing anxiety during this recovery period.
In summary, while some degree of discomfort can be expected after an abortion, especially in the first week, it’s essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If the pain is persistent, particularly if it is associated with urination, or if you develop any new symptoms, please consult your healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. They can provide the necessary tests and treatments to ensure your recovery is on track and address any complications that may arise. Your health and well-being are paramount, and seeking timely medical advice is always the best course of action.
