Vaginal Discharge Color Changes: Signs of Infection? - Obstetrics and Gynecology

There is an issue with the color of the discharge?

A week ago, after intercourse, I occasionally experienced itching around the vaginal opening.
I have a history of infections, so I applied a long, tube-shaped ointment 1 to 2 times.
However, the day after the second application, I suddenly noticed some discharge and upon checking, I felt that the color of the vagina seemed a bit different from usual, appearing somewhat whitish.
Could this indicate an infection?

Niming, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/12/20

Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

The response likely indicates vaginitis; it is recommended to seek medical treatment.

More Info

Vaginal discharge can vary in color, consistency, and odor, and changes in these characteristics can indeed be indicative of an infection or other medical conditions. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing some changes in your vaginal discharge after having sexual intercourse, along with some itching and a noticeable alteration in color to a whitish hue.

Signs of Infection
1. Color Change: Normal vaginal discharge is typically clear or milky white. If the discharge becomes yellow, green, or has a strong odor, it may indicate an infection. A whitish discharge can sometimes be normal, especially if it is not accompanied by other symptoms.

2. Itching and Irritation: The presence of itching, burning, or irritation is often a sign of an infection, such as a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis. Yeast infections typically cause a thick, white, cottage cheese-like discharge, while bacterial vaginosis may lead to a thin, grayish discharge with a fishy odor.

3. Odor: A strong or unpleasant odor accompanying the discharge can also suggest an infection. Normal discharge does not have a strong smell, while infections often do.

Possible Causes
- Yeast Infection: This is caused by an overgrowth of Candida, a type of fungus. Symptoms include itching, irritation, and a thick, white discharge.

- Bacterial Vaginosis (BV): This occurs when there is an imbalance of bacteria in the vagina. Symptoms include a thin, grayish-white discharge and a fishy odor, especially after intercourse.

- Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Infections such as chlamydia or gonorrhea can also cause changes in discharge, often accompanied by other symptoms like pain during urination or intercourse.

What to Do Next
1. Consult a Healthcare Provider: Given your symptoms and the changes in discharge, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. They may perform a pelvic exam and take samples of the discharge to identify the cause.

2. Avoid Self-Medication: While you mentioned having some medication left over from a previous infection, it is important not to self-medicate without consulting a healthcare professional. Using leftover medications can sometimes worsen the situation or lead to resistance.

3. Maintain Hygiene: Keep the vaginal area clean and dry. Avoid using scented products, douches, or other irritants that could exacerbate the symptoms.

4. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any additional symptoms that may develop, such as fever, increased pain, or changes in urination, and report these to your healthcare provider.

Conclusion
In summary, the changes in your vaginal discharge, particularly the color and the presence of itching, could indicate an infection. It is essential to seek medical advice for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Early intervention can help prevent complications and ensure a quicker recovery. Remember, maintaining open communication with your healthcare provider about your symptoms and any concerns you have is crucial for your health and well-being.
