Color of secretions
Hello, doctor.
I have been experiencing an increase in discharge with color for several months.
After taking antibiotics, it is often yellow and sometimes green, but it does not have an odor or cause itching.
A few weeks ago, I went to Taichung Veterans General Hospital for an examination, and the doctor checked the discharge under a microscope, finding normal results with no infection.
However, I am still puzzled as to why the discharge, which used to be clear, is now always yellow.
Could this be related to increased hormone secretion? I feel like my vagina is quite fragile, and I'm unsure how to maintain its health.
Taking probiotics doesn't seem to help much.

Hello, based on your symptom description, it is recommended to keep the perineal area clean and dry, avoid tight-fitting clothing, and consider soaking in a bath to relieve symptoms.
If you experience any discomfort, please consult a physician for diagnosis and treatment.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.

More Info
Changes in vaginal discharge can often be a source of concern for many women, especially when there is a noticeable shift in color or consistency. In your case, you mentioned that your discharge has been predominantly yellow or occasionally green for several months, even after a course of antibiotics, and that it has been evaluated by a physician who found no signs of infection. This situation raises several important points regarding the nature of vaginal discharge, potential causes for its changes, and appropriate care strategies.
Firstly, it's essential to understand that vaginal discharge can vary significantly in color, consistency, and volume throughout the menstrual cycle due to hormonal fluctuations. Normal discharge can range from clear and stretchy (like egg whites) to cloudy or slightly colored, depending on the phase of the cycle. Yellow discharge, particularly if it is not accompanied by a foul odor or itching, can sometimes be a normal variation, especially if it is related to hormonal changes or the presence of cervical mucus.
However, persistent changes in discharge color, especially if they deviate from your baseline, warrant attention. While your recent examination showed no signs of infection, it is still possible that other factors could be influencing the color of your discharge. For instance, hormonal imbalances, such as those caused by stress, changes in diet, or fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone levels, can lead to increased discharge or changes in its color. Additionally, the presence of certain bacteria or yeast, even in the absence of a full-blown infection, can alter the characteristics of vaginal discharge.
Regarding your concern about vaginal health and care, here are some tips that may help maintain a healthy vaginal environment:
1. Maintain Good Hygiene: Regularly wash the external genital area with mild soap and water. Avoid douching or using scented products, as these can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina.
2. Wear Breathable Fabrics: Opt for cotton underwear and avoid tight-fitting clothing to reduce moisture buildup, which can promote bacterial growth.
3. Stay Hydrated and Eat a Balanced Diet: Proper hydration and a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can support overall health, including vaginal health.
4. Consider Probiotics: While you mentioned that probiotics haven't seemed to help much, they can still be beneficial for some women. Probiotics can help maintain a healthy balance of bacteria in the vagina, particularly after antibiotic use.
5. Monitor Your Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in your discharge, including color, consistency, and any accompanying symptoms like odor or irritation. If you notice any significant changes, it may be worth consulting with your healthcare provider again.
6. Regular Check-ups: Continue to have regular gynecological exams to monitor your vaginal health, especially if you have ongoing concerns about discharge or any other symptoms.
In conclusion, while changes in vaginal discharge can be concerning, they are not always indicative of an underlying problem, especially if there are no accompanying symptoms of infection. Hormonal fluctuations, lifestyle factors, and individual variations can all play a role in the characteristics of vaginal discharge. If you continue to have concerns or if your symptoms change, it is advisable to follow up with your healthcare provider for further evaluation and personalized advice.
