Pregnancy issues
I had a natural miscarriage during my first pregnancy, and now I'm almost 8 weeks into my second pregnancy.
I would like to ask the doctor if I can take folic acid and also see a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner for miscarriage prevention medication.
Recently, I've been experiencing slight pain at the vaginal opening; is this a cause for concern?
Kk, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/12/23
Dr. Yan Sumei reply Traditional Chinese Medicine
Dear Kk,
I am glad to receive your letter.
Taking folic acid and visiting a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner for miscarriage prevention medication do not conflict; just inform your TCM doctor.
Since you are two months pregnant and experiencing pain at the vaginal opening, I recommend that you consult a Western medicine obstetrician and gynecologist for a detailed examination to understand the cause before proceeding with further treatment.
This approach is more appropriate.
Wishing you a smooth pregnancy!
Sincerely,

It's great to hear that you're seeking advice regarding your pregnancy after a previous miscarriage. The concerns you have about taking folic acid and Chinese medicine, as well as the vaginal discomfort you're experiencing, are important topics to address.
First and foremost, taking folic acid during pregnancy is highly recommended. Folic acid plays a crucial role in fetal development, particularly in the early stages of pregnancy. It helps prevent neural tube defects and supports the overall growth of the fetus. The general recommendation is to take at least 400 micrograms of folic acid daily, starting before conception and continuing through the first trimester.
Regarding the use of Chinese medicine, it is generally considered safe to combine folic acid with certain traditional Chinese herbal remedies, including those used for maintaining pregnancy (安胎藥). However, it is essential to inform your Chinese medicine practitioner about your current condition and any medications you are taking. They can then tailor their treatment to ensure it is safe and appropriate for your specific situation.
It's important to note that some Chinese herbs may not be suitable during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester. For example, certain herbs like "Honghua" (safflower) are often used in traditional practices to induce menstruation or facilitate miscarriage, and should be avoided. Therefore, always consult with a qualified practitioner who is knowledgeable about pregnancy and can provide guidance on which herbs are safe to use.
Now, regarding the vaginal discomfort you mentioned, it is crucial to take this symptom seriously, especially after a history of miscarriage. Mild discomfort can sometimes be normal due to hormonal changes and the physical adjustments your body is making as it accommodates the growing fetus. However, any pain or unusual symptoms should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. It is advisable to see an obstetrician or gynecologist who can perform a thorough examination to rule out any potential issues, such as infections or other complications that may require treatment.
In summary, you can safely take folic acid during your pregnancy, and with proper guidance, you may also use Chinese medicine. However, always communicate openly with your healthcare providers about all the treatments you are considering. Additionally, do not hesitate to seek medical attention for any concerning symptoms, such as vaginal pain. Early intervention can be key to ensuring a healthy pregnancy. Wishing you the best for your pregnancy journey!
