Feeling a noise in the ear when yawning?
Hello Dr.
Cheng, three days ago when I woke up and yawned, I noticed an uncomfortable noise in my left ear, specifically in the inner ear membrane.
It feels like the sound of my yawn is amplified, and compared to my right ear, there is a sensation of pressure and pain.
The sounds I hear in my left ear when I swallow are also quite different from those in my right ear.
This condition persists until now.
What could be the cause?

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology
Hello, it is recommended to seek medical examination, as it could be due to earwax blockage or a fungal infection, among other possibilities.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info
Hearing noises in your ear when yawning can be attributed to several factors, primarily related to the function of the Eustachian tube, the middle ear, and the inner ear. The Eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the back of the throat and helps equalize pressure in the ear. When you yawn, swallow, or even chew, the Eustachian tube opens to allow air to flow into the middle ear, which can sometimes create a sensation of fullness or pressure. This can lead to the perception of sounds that may not be present in the external environment.
In your case, the discomfort and the amplified sound in your left ear compared to the right could indicate a few possibilities:
1. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction: If the Eustachian tube does not open properly during yawning or swallowing, it can lead to a pressure imbalance in the middle ear. This can cause a sensation of fullness, discomfort, and abnormal sounds, such as a popping or crackling noise. This dysfunction can be temporary and may resolve on its own, but if it persists, it may require medical evaluation.
2. Middle Ear Issues: Conditions such as fluid accumulation in the middle ear (otitis media) or inflammation can also lead to abnormal sounds and sensations. If there is any infection or fluid buildup, it can affect how sound is transmitted through the ear, leading to a feeling of pressure and discomfort.
3. Inner Ear Sensitivity: The inner ear is responsible for hearing and balance. If there is any irritation or sensitivity in the inner ear structures, it can lead to abnormal auditory perceptions. This could be due to a variety of factors, including allergies, sinus issues, or even stress.
4. Tinnitus: Although you did not mention a ringing sound, it is worth noting that tinnitus can manifest in various forms, including pulsatile tinnitus, where you might hear sounds that are rhythmic and coincide with your heartbeat or other bodily functions.
5. Muscle Contraction: The muscles in the middle ear, such as the stapedius and tensor tympani, can contract in response to loud sounds or changes in pressure. This contraction can sometimes be perceived as a noise or discomfort in the ear.
Given that you have experienced this sensation for several days and it is accompanied by discomfort, it would be advisable to consult an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, which may include a hearing test and an evaluation of the Eustachian tube function. They may also check for any signs of infection or fluid in the middle ear.
In the meantime, you can try some home remedies to alleviate the discomfort. These include:
- Yawning or Swallowing: Continue to yawn or swallow frequently to help open the Eustachian tube and equalize pressure.
- Nasal Decongestants: If you have nasal congestion, using a saline nasal spray or a decongestant may help clear the Eustachian tube.
- Warm Compress: Applying a warm compress to the affected ear may provide some relief from discomfort.
In summary, the noises you hear in your ear when yawning could be related to Eustachian tube dysfunction, middle ear issues, or inner ear sensitivity. It is essential to monitor your symptoms and seek medical advice if they persist or worsen.
