Appearance of small light spots in the eyes?
Hello, doctor: I have high myopia and also experience floaters.
Sometimes I see small light spots in my vision, which disappear after I blink.
Could this be due to the retina being pulled? Do light spots caused by retinal issues disappear when I blink? However, the doctor has examined me and said everything is fine.
Should I return for a follow-up? Thank you!

If this condition persists, it is recommended to have a follow-up appointment periodically to check the retina.

More Info
Flashing lights in vision, often described as seeing small light spots or flashes, can be concerning, especially for individuals with high myopia or other pre-existing eye conditions like floaters. In your case, as someone with high myopia and floaters, it's important to understand the potential implications of these symptoms and when to seek further medical attention.
Understanding Flashing Lights
Flashing lights or light spots in your vision can occur due to several reasons, primarily related to the retina and vitreous humor of the eye. In high myopia, the eye is elongated, which can lead to changes in the vitreous gel that fills the eye. As the vitreous gel ages, it can pull away from the retina, causing flashes of light. This phenomenon is often referred to as "posterior vitreous detachment" (PVD). While PVD is common and often benign, it can sometimes lead to more serious conditions, such as retinal tears or detachments.
When to Seek Eye Care
1. Frequency and Duration: If you experience these flashes occasionally and they last only a brief moment, it may not be a cause for alarm. However, if the flashes become more frequent, last longer, or are accompanied by other symptoms such as a sudden increase in floaters, a shadow or curtain over your vision, or a significant decrease in vision, you should seek immediate medical attention.
2. Accompanying Symptoms: The presence of new floaters, especially if they appear suddenly in large numbers, or any changes in your peripheral vision should prompt a visit to your eye care provider. These symptoms can indicate a more serious issue, such as a retinal tear or detachment.
3. Previous Eye Conditions: Given your history of high myopia and floaters, you are at a higher risk for retinal issues. Regular eye exams are crucial for monitoring the health of your retina, especially if you notice changes in your vision.
The Role of Blinking
Regarding your question about whether the light spots disappear when you blink, this can be a common experience. Blinking can temporarily change the pressure within the eye and the position of the vitreous gel, which might cause the flashes to diminish momentarily. However, this does not necessarily indicate that there is no underlying issue with the retina. It’s essential to remember that while blinking may provide temporary relief from the visual phenomenon, it does not address the root cause.
Follow-Up Care
Since your doctor has previously examined your eyes and found no significant issues, it may not be necessary to return for a follow-up unless your symptoms change or worsen. However, if you continue to experience anxiety about your symptoms or if they persist, it is always a good idea to consult your eye care provider for peace of mind. They can perform a thorough examination, including a dilated fundus exam, to ensure that your retina is healthy and that there are no signs of complications.
Conclusion
In summary, while occasional flashes of light can be a benign symptom, it is crucial to monitor the frequency and accompanying symptoms. Given your history of high myopia and floaters, maintaining regular eye examinations is essential for early detection of any potential issues. If you have any doubts or if your symptoms change, do not hesitate to seek further evaluation from your eye care professional. Your eye health is paramount, and proactive care can help prevent serious complications.
