Vibration sensation in the lower right chest cavity?
Recently, when I run, I feel something vibrating in the lower right side of my chest.
I can also feel it when I touch it, and it hurts when I take a deep breath.
What could this be a symptom of? Is there anything I should pay attention to?

Dear Luan: Based on your description, there seems to be a possibility of right pleural effusion.
However, considering your age, it may simply be that your low weight is causing vascular prominence.
The simplest solution is to get an X-ray at Changhua Hospital to assess your condition.

More Info
Experiencing vibrations or unusual sensations in the lower right chest during physical activity, such as running, can be concerning and may indicate a variety of underlying issues. The sensation of something vibrating or moving in the chest, especially when accompanied by pain during deep breathing, warrants careful consideration and evaluation.
Possible Causes
1. Musculoskeletal Issues: One common cause of sensations in the chest area, particularly during physical activity, is related to the musculoskeletal system. Muscle strains or injuries to the intercostal muscles (the muscles between the ribs) can lead to discomfort or unusual sensations, especially during movement or deep breathing. If you have recently increased your physical activity or changed your exercise routine, this could be a contributing factor.
2. Respiratory Conditions: Conditions affecting the lungs, such as pleuritis (inflammation of the pleura, the lining around the lungs) or pneumonia, can cause pain and unusual sensations in the chest. If the pain worsens with deep breaths, it may indicate irritation or inflammation in the lung area.
3. Cardiac Concerns: While less common, it is essential to consider cardiac issues, especially if the sensation is accompanied by other symptoms such as shortness of breath, dizziness, or radiating pain. Conditions like pericarditis (inflammation of the heart's outer lining) or other heart-related issues could present with similar symptoms.
4. Gastrointestinal Issues: Sometimes, gastrointestinal problems such as acid reflux or esophageal spasms can cause sensations in the chest area. These conditions can lead to discomfort that may feel like vibrations or pressure, particularly after eating or during physical activity.
5. Anxiety and Stress: Psychological factors can also manifest physically. Anxiety and panic attacks may lead to sensations of vibrations or tightness in the chest, often accompanied by rapid breathing or heart palpitations.
When to Seek Medical Attention
Given the symptoms you describe, it is crucial to monitor the situation closely. Here are some guidelines on when to seek medical attention:
- Persistent Symptoms: If the vibrations or pain persist, worsen, or do not improve with rest, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional.
- Accompanying Symptoms: Seek immediate medical attention if you experience additional symptoms such as chest pain that radiates to the arm or jaw, shortness of breath, dizziness, or excessive sweating.
- Changes in Activity: If you notice that the sensations occur more frequently with specific activities or positions, it may indicate an underlying issue that needs to be addressed.
Recommended Actions
1. Rest and Modify Activity: If the sensations occur during running, consider taking a break from high-impact activities and switch to low-impact exercises like walking or swimming until you can assess the situation further.
2. Deep Breathing Exercises: Gentle deep breathing exercises may help alleviate discomfort and improve lung function. However, avoid forcing deep breaths if it causes pain.
3. Consult a Healthcare Provider: Schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. They may recommend imaging studies, such as a chest X-ray or an MRI, to rule out any serious conditions.
4. Keep a Symptom Diary: Documenting when the vibrations occur, their intensity, and any accompanying symptoms can provide valuable information for your healthcare provider.
In conclusion, while the sensations you are experiencing may not necessarily indicate a severe condition, it is essential to approach the situation with caution. Monitoring your symptoms and seeking medical advice will help ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly and appropriately.
