There is a lump under the tongue?

Hello, doctor.
I have a round bump under my tongue that feels smooth when I touch it with my tongue.
It has been there for about ten years, since elementary school.
I don’t smoke, drink alcohol, or chew betel nut, so it shouldn't be related to those habits, right?

Xiao Zhi, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/12/31

Dr. Zhang Xiangyuan reply Dentistry

Dear user, based on your description of round, smooth protrusions found under the tongue for approximately ten years, it is advisable to seek an early consultation with a dentist.
The dentist can determine whether the lesions are normal anatomical structures or if a biopsy is necessary for further diagnosis and treatment.
Thank you for your inquiry.

When it comes to bumps or nodules under the tongue, it’s essential to understand that there are various potential causes, and most of them are benign. Based on your description, it sounds like you have a lingual nodule, which is often a normal anatomical variant or a benign growth. These nodules can be composed of various tissues, including mucous glands, and they can feel smooth and round when touched.

Lingual nodules can be present from childhood and may not cause any discomfort or issues. Since you mentioned that this bump has been there for over ten years and you have no habits like smoking, drinking alcohol, or chewing betel nut, it is less likely to be associated with more serious conditions, such as cancer. However, it’s always prudent to monitor any changes in size, shape, or texture, as well as any new symptoms such as pain, bleeding, or difficulty swallowing.

In many cases, these nodules are simply a result of normal anatomical variations or minor issues such as blocked salivary glands. They can also be caused by irritation from biting the tongue or from dental appliances. If the bump is not causing you any pain or discomfort, and if it has remained stable over the years, it is likely nothing to worry about.

However, if you notice any changes, such as an increase in size, changes in color, or if it begins to cause discomfort, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare professional. A dentist or an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist can perform a thorough examination, and if necessary, imaging studies or a biopsy can be done to rule out any serious conditions.

In summary, while it sounds like your lingual nodule is likely benign, it’s essential to keep an eye on it and consult a healthcare provider if you have any concerns or if there are changes in its characteristics. Regular dental check-ups can also help in monitoring oral health and identifying any potential issues early on. Maintaining good oral hygiene and a healthy lifestyle will contribute positively to your overall oral health.
