Could I be pregnant?

Hello Doctor, my period was from November 17 to November 23, and I did not have a period in December.
On December 31, I had intercourse with my boyfriend, but the condom accidentally broke.
I'm also unsure about when my ovulation period is.
Could you please tell me if my ovulation period for December has already passed since my period is late, or am I possibly waiting for my next ovulation since my period hasn't arrived yet? I immediately took the emergency contraceptive pill, Ella.
Is it possible for my period to come in two to three days? If it does come, does that mean I am not pregnant? Thank you for answering my questions.

Niming, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/01/01

The menstrual cycle has become irregular, making it difficult to determine the ovulation period.
Although the condom broke and emergency contraception has been taken, the likelihood of pregnancy is low.
If there is bleeding resembling a menstrual period in a few days, it usually indicates that pregnancy has not occurred.
It is recommended to take a pregnancy test again after mid-January for more certainty.
Sincerely, Dr.

When considering the possibility of pregnancy, understanding your menstrual cycle and ovulation is crucial. The menstrual cycle typically lasts between 21 to 35 days, with ovulation occurring approximately 14 days before the start of your next period. In your case, since your last menstrual period started on November 17 and lasted until November 23, you would generally expect your next period to arrive around December 17 to December 23, assuming a typical 28-day cycle.

Since you mentioned that your period did not arrive in December, it is important to consider a few factors. First, if you had unprotected intercourse on December 31, and if you were indeed in your fertile window (which typically occurs around the middle of your cycle), there is a possibility of conception. However, if your menstrual cycle is irregular or if you have experienced stress or other factors that could delay ovulation, it is also possible that your period is simply late.

Taking emergency contraception, such as Ella, can significantly reduce the chances of pregnancy if taken within the recommended time frame after unprotected intercourse. Ella is effective for up to 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected sex, and it works primarily by delaying or inhibiting ovulation. If you took Ella shortly after the incident, it is likely that it has worked to prevent ovulation, which would decrease the likelihood of pregnancy.

Regarding your question about whether you could expect your period to arrive within a few days after taking Ella, it is possible. Some women experience a withdrawal bleed (similar to a period) within a few days after taking emergency contraception, while others may experience a delay in their next period. If your period arrives, it typically indicates that you are not pregnant. However, if your period does not come within a week of when you expect it, it would be advisable to take a pregnancy test for confirmation.

In summary, while there is a possibility of pregnancy due to the timing of your unprotected intercourse, taking emergency contraception like Ella significantly reduces that risk. If your period arrives soon, it is a good sign that you are not pregnant. If you experience further delays or have any concerns, consulting with a healthcare provider for a pregnancy test and further guidance would be the best course of action. Remember, understanding your body and menstrual cycle can help you make informed decisions about your reproductive health.
