Persistent urge to urinate after completing urination?

Hello.
This morning, I suddenly got up to use the bathroom because I felt the urge to urinate (which is unusual for me).
After urinating, I still felt the urge and experienced a persistent sensation of fullness in my lower abdomen for quite a while.
I usually don't have a habit of drinking water and only take a sip when I think about it.
Could this possibly be a urinary tract infection or cystitis?

Xiao, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/01/03

More Info

The symptoms you are experiencing, particularly the persistent urge to urinate even after emptying your bladder, along with the sensation of abdominal fullness, could indeed indicate a urinary tract issue, such as a bladder infection (cystitis) or urethritis. However, there are several potential causes for these symptoms, and it is essential to consider them in a broader context.

Possible Causes
1. Urinary Tract Infection (UTI): This is one of the most common causes of a persistent urge to urinate. Infections can irritate the bladder and urethra, leading to increased frequency and urgency of urination, often accompanied by discomfort or a burning sensation.

2. Bladder Irritation: Factors such as dehydration, certain foods, or beverages (like caffeine or alcohol) can irritate the bladder lining, causing similar symptoms.

3. Overactive Bladder (OAB): This condition is characterized by an urgent need to urinate frequently, often with little warning. It can occur even when the bladder is not full.

4. Interstitial Cystitis (IC): This is a chronic condition that causes bladder pressure, bladder pain, and sometimes pelvic pain. The symptoms can mimic those of a UTI but without the presence of an infection.

5. Prostatitis (in males): In men, inflammation of the prostate gland can lead to urinary symptoms, including urgency and discomfort.

6. Bladder Stones or Tumors: Though less common, these can also cause similar symptoms by obstructing the flow of urine or irritating the bladder wall.

Recommendations
1. Hydration: It is crucial to increase your fluid intake. Dehydration can concentrate urine, leading to irritation and increased urgency. Aim to drink adequate water throughout the day.

2. Medical Evaluation: Given your symptoms, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider. They may perform a urinalysis to check for signs of infection, blood, or other abnormalities. Depending on the findings, further imaging studies or cystoscopy may be warranted.

3. Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that certain foods or drinks are contributing to your symptoms, try to avoid them. Common irritants include caffeine, alcohol, spicy foods, and artificial sweeteners.

4. Pelvic Floor Exercises: If your symptoms are related to bladder control, pelvic floor exercises (Kegel exercises) may help strengthen the muscles involved in urination.

5. Medications: If diagnosed with a UTI, antibiotics may be necessary. For conditions like OAB, medications that relax the bladder may be prescribed.

Conclusion
While your symptoms could suggest a urinary tract infection or another bladder-related issue, only a healthcare professional can provide a definitive diagnosis and appropriate treatment. It is essential to address these symptoms promptly to prevent potential complications and improve your quality of life. If you experience worsening symptoms, such as fever, severe pain, or blood in your urine, seek medical attention immediately.
