I feel tightness near my right rib cage, and it hurts when I lift heavy objects?
I was diagnosed with early-stage lung adenocarcinoma six years ago and underwent surgery to remove one lobe of my right lung.
I have since recovered from the surgery and have regular check-ups with no abnormalities.
However, for the past five days, I have been feeling tightness near my right chest close to the ribs, and it hurts when I lift heavy objects.
I had an X-ray done, which came back normal, and my doctor said there are no issues.
I'm unsure of the cause and would like to seek further advice from my doctor.
Thank you.

Dear Mr.
Hsiao: Due to your medical history, I personally recommend scheduling a CT scan or bone scan, as X-rays cannot detect subtle changes.

Experiencing chest tightness or pain near the ribs after lung surgery can be concerning, especially for someone with a history of lung cancer and previous surgical interventions. While it is reassuring that your X-ray results came back normal and your doctor has indicated that there are no immediate concerns, it is important to understand the potential causes of your symptoms and when to seek further evaluation.
Post-surgical pain and discomfort can arise from several factors. After lung surgery, especially procedures involving the removal of lung tissue, patients may experience changes in the way their chest wall and surrounding muscles function. The tightness you are feeling could be due to muscle strain or tension, particularly if you have recently engaged in activities that involve lifting or moving heavy objects. This can lead to localized muscle soreness, which may feel like tightness or pressure in the chest area.
Another possibility is that the tightness is related to scar tissue formation. After any surgical procedure, the body heals by forming scar tissue, which can sometimes lead to adhesions or restrictions in movement. This can cause discomfort or a sensation of tightness, especially when engaging in physical activities. Scar tissue can also affect the nerves in the area, potentially leading to sensations of pain or tightness.
Additionally, it is worth considering the psychological aspect of having a history of lung cancer. Anxiety and stress related to your past diagnosis and treatment can manifest physically, sometimes resulting in muscle tension or a heightened perception of pain. It is not uncommon for individuals with a history of cancer to be more attuned to bodily sensations, leading to increased awareness of discomfort that may have gone unnoticed in someone without such a history.
Given that your symptoms have persisted for five days, it is advisable to monitor them closely. If the tightness worsens, if you experience any new symptoms such as shortness of breath, fever, or significant changes in your overall health, it would be prudent to return to your healthcare provider for further evaluation. They may consider additional imaging studies or refer you to a specialist, such as a pulmonologist or a pain management expert, to explore other potential causes of your discomfort.
In the meantime, consider engaging in gentle stretching exercises and deep breathing techniques, which can help alleviate muscle tension and improve lung function. Heat therapy, such as warm compresses or heating pads, may also provide relief for muscle tightness. However, avoid any activities that exacerbate your pain, and listen to your body’s signals.
In summary, while your recent symptoms of chest tightness near the ribs may be related to muscle strain, scar tissue, or even psychological factors, it is essential to remain vigilant and consult your healthcare provider if your condition does not improve or worsens. Your history of lung surgery and cancer necessitates a careful approach to any new symptoms, ensuring that you receive appropriate care and support.
