Seeing radiating lines?

Hello doctor, sometimes in brighter light, I see radiating lines (cracks) in front of my eyes.
Could this be a retinal tear? Do I need to see a doctor? Thank you.

A Ce, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/01/04

Dr. Wang Zhishun reply Ophthalmology

Hello, this is likely not a retinal tear; it is more probable that it originates from the vitreous.
I recommend seeking a medical examination.

When you experience radiating lines in your vision, especially under bright light, it can be concerning. These visual phenomena can often be attributed to several factors, and understanding them is crucial for determining whether you need to see an eye doctor.

Firstly, the appearance of radiating lines or patterns in your vision is commonly associated with a condition known as "visual snow" or "entoptic phenomena." These are visual disturbances that can occur due to various reasons, including the way light interacts with the structures in your eye. In many cases, these lines are not indicative of a serious issue, but rather a benign phenomenon related to the way your brain processes visual information.

However, it is essential to differentiate between benign visual disturbances and symptoms that may indicate a more serious condition, such as retinal tears or detachments. Retinal tears can occur when the vitreous gel inside the eye pulls away from the retina, leading to symptoms such as flashes of light, floaters, or changes in vision. If you are experiencing these symptoms alongside the radiating lines, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention.

In your case, since you mentioned that the lines appear primarily in bright light, it is less likely to be a retinal tear. Instead, it could be related to the way your eyes react to light or even a result of eye strain or fatigue. Factors such as prolonged screen time, inadequate lighting, or even dry eyes can exacerbate these symptoms.
If you have not experienced any other concerning symptoms, such as sudden vision loss, increased floaters, or flashes of light, it may not be urgent to see a doctor. However, if these symptoms persist, worsen, or are accompanied by other visual changes, it is advisable to schedule an appointment with an eye care professional. They can perform a comprehensive eye examination to rule out any underlying conditions and provide appropriate recommendations.

In summary, while the appearance of radiating lines in your vision can be alarming, it is not always indicative of a serious issue. However, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If you notice any changes or if the lines become more frequent or bothersome, do not hesitate to consult an eye doctor. Regular eye exams are crucial for maintaining eye health and addressing any potential issues early on.
