Right abdominal pain?

Recently, I have been feeling nauseous frequently, possibly due to an intolerance to tea.
When lying on my left side, I start to experience a gradual pain near the lower right rib cage close to the waist, but the pain subsides after changing positions.
The area of discomfort seems to be somewhat close to the stomach.

Chen Yu-Jun, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/01/09

Dr. Huang Hongshuo reply Family Medicine

It is advisable to seek medical attention as there are many reasons that could cause these symptoms.
The stomach is generally located in the upper abdomen, slightly to the left.
Your pain could be due to muscle pain, nerve pain, kidney stones, inflammation, and many other possibilities.

More Info

Right abdominal pain can be a concerning symptom, and understanding its potential causes is crucial for effective management. The right side of the abdomen houses several vital organs, including the liver, gallbladder, right kidney, and parts of the intestines. Therefore, pain in this area can arise from various conditions, ranging from benign to serious.

Potential Causes of Right Abdominal Pain
1. Gastrointestinal Issues: Conditions such as gastritis, peptic ulcers, or gallbladder disease (like gallstones or cholecystitis) can cause pain in the right upper quadrant. If the pain is accompanied by nausea or vomiting, it may indicate a gastrointestinal disturbance.

2. Musculoskeletal Pain: Sometimes, the pain may not originate from the organs but rather from the muscles or bones in the area. Strain from physical activity, poor posture, or even sleeping positions can lead to discomfort that mimics organ pain.

3. Kidney Problems: Right-sided kidney stones or infections can also present as abdominal pain. This pain may radiate to the back and can be associated with urinary symptoms.

4. Appendicitis: Although the appendix is located in the lower right abdomen, early appendicitis can sometimes present as pain in the upper abdomen. This is a medical emergency and typically requires surgical intervention.

5. Referred Pain: Pain in the right abdomen can sometimes be referred from other areas, such as the chest or back. Conditions like pneumonia or pleurisy can cause referred pain due to irritation of the diaphragm.

Home Remedies and Management
While it is essential to consult a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis, there are some home remedies and lifestyle adjustments that may help alleviate mild discomfort:
1. Rest: If the pain is due to muscle strain, resting the affected area can help reduce inflammation and discomfort.

2. Heat Therapy: Applying a warm compress or heating pad to the painful area can help relax muscles and alleviate pain.

3. Hydration: Staying well-hydrated is crucial, especially if nausea is present. Sipping on clear fluids can help settle the stomach.

4. Dietary Adjustments: If certain foods or beverages (like tea, in your case) seem to trigger discomfort, it may be beneficial to avoid them. Eating small, bland meals can also help if gastrointestinal issues are suspected.

5. Gentle Movement: If the pain is not severe, gentle stretching or walking can help improve circulation and reduce stiffness.

6. Over-the-Counter Medications: Non-prescription pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help manage mild pain and inflammation. However, it's essential to follow the recommended dosages and consult a doctor if you have any underlying health conditions.

When to Seek Medical Attention
If the pain persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms such as fever, significant nausea, vomiting, changes in bowel habits, or jaundice, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly. A healthcare provider may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound or CT scan, to determine the underlying cause of the pain.

In summary, while right abdominal pain can stem from various causes, understanding the potential origins and implementing some home remedies may provide temporary relief. However, persistent or severe pain warrants a thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional to ensure appropriate treatment and management.
