Dryness of the glans?

Hello doctor, recently I noticed that during masturbation, there are white flakes appearing near the coronal sulcus of the glans, similar to how the skin on the face or lips can become dry in winter.
The surface also feels dry and wrinkled.
When I am erect, the glans is exposed, but strangely, when I am erect inside my pants, there are no white flakes.
However, when I take it out to masturbate and it is exposed to air, this dryness occurs.
There is no itching, no odor, and no discharge.
Last week, I had more intense and frequent sexual activity with my girlfriend.
Could this be related? The dry area does not hurt when touched.
I usually rinse with clean water and wash with my index and thumb.
What could this issue be? Thank you, doctor.

More Info

Understanding dryness around the glans, particularly in the area of the coronal sulcus, can be concerning, especially when it manifests as white flakes or a dry, wrinkled appearance. This condition, while it may seem alarming, is often benign and can be attributed to several factors.

Possible Causes of Dryness Around the Glans
1. Skin Dryness: Just like the skin on your face or lips can become dry and flaky, the skin on the penis can also experience dryness. This is particularly common in colder months or in dry environments. The skin in this area is sensitive and can react to changes in humidity and temperature.

2. Friction and Irritation: Frequent masturbation or sexual activity can lead to friction, which may irritate the skin. If the skin is not adequately lubricated during these activities, it can become dry and flaky. The fact that you notice this dryness more when exposed to air suggests that the skin may be reacting to changes in moisture levels.

3. Hygiene Products: Sometimes, soaps or body washes that are used during cleaning can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness. It's essential to use mild, unscented products to avoid irritation.

4. Lack of Natural Lubrication: During sexual activity, natural lubrication from the partner can help prevent dryness. If there is insufficient lubrication, it can lead to friction and subsequent dryness.

5. Dermatological Conditions: Conditions such as eczema or psoriasis can also affect the genital area, leading to dryness and flaking. However, these conditions typically come with additional symptoms such as itching or redness.

6. Infections: While you mentioned that there is no itching, odor, or discharge, it's still worth noting that certain infections can cause dryness or changes in the skin's appearance. However, these usually present with other symptoms.

Solutions and Recommendations
1. Moisturizing: Consider using a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer specifically designed for sensitive skin. Applying a small amount to the affected area can help alleviate dryness. Look for products that contain natural ingredients like aloe vera or coconut oil.

2. Lubrication During Activities: When engaging in sexual activities or masturbation, using a water-based lubricant can help reduce friction and prevent dryness. This can enhance comfort and protect the skin.

3. Gentle Cleaning: Continue to clean the area with warm water and avoid harsh soaps. If you use soap, ensure it is mild and free from fragrances or irritants.

4. Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on the condition. If the dryness persists or worsens, or if you develop any new symptoms (such as itching, redness, or discharge), it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation.

5. Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that any products you are using (like soaps or lotions) may be contributing to the dryness, consider discontinuing them and see if there is an improvement.

6. Consult a Specialist: If the issue continues despite self-care measures, or if you have concerns about underlying conditions, it may be beneficial to see a dermatologist or urologist. They can provide a more detailed assessment and recommend appropriate treatments.

In conclusion, while dryness around the glans can be concerning, it is often manageable with simple lifestyle adjustments and proper care. Paying attention to your body's responses and maintaining good hygiene practices can significantly improve the condition. If you have any further questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for personalized advice.
