Erectile Dysfunction After Illness: Causes and Solutions - Urology

Complete erectile dysfunction?

Previously, my boyfriend would easily get an erection every day and had a strong desire.
However, this past Monday, he caught a cold with a fever and body aches.
He is still not fully recovered.
Since the first night of his cold, he still had some sensation, but by the second night, he mentioned that urination was painful.
Due to the body aches, he didn't think much of it.
Now, he has completely lost all sensation and is unable to achieve an erection.
Could this be caused by the cold virus or the medication he took? Is it possible that he will never be able to get an erection again, or is this a temporary issue? If it is permanent, what treatment options are available? If it is temporary, how should it be treated? My boyfriend is very concerned but feels embarrassed to see a doctor.
Please help me with this.
Thank you.

First, adjust your physical condition; it should be temporary and can improve.
If it persists for a while, then seek medical attention.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) can be a distressing condition, especially when it occurs suddenly after an illness. In your boyfriend's case, it seems to have developed following a recent illness characterized by fever and body aches. Understanding the potential causes and solutions for this situation is crucial.

Firstly, it’s important to recognize that temporary erectile dysfunction can occur after an illness, particularly one that involves systemic symptoms like fever and body aches. The body’s response to illness can lead to various physiological changes that may affect sexual function. For instance, fever and pain can lead to increased stress and anxiety, which are known contributors to ED. Additionally, certain medications taken to alleviate symptoms of the illness, such as pain relievers or decongestants, can also have side effects that impact erectile function.

In your boyfriend's case, the fact that he experienced some sensation initially but then lost the ability to achieve an erection suggests that the issue may be more psychological or related to the physical stress of the illness rather than a permanent physiological change. It is also worth noting that urinary pain can sometimes be associated with infections, which could further contribute to anxiety and stress regarding sexual performance.

The good news is that in many cases, erectile dysfunction following an illness is temporary. As your boyfriend recovers from his illness, it is likely that his erectile function will return to normal. However, there are several steps he can take to facilitate recovery:
1. Rest and Recovery: Ensure he gets adequate rest and allows his body to heal from the illness. Stress and fatigue can exacerbate ED.

2. Hydration and Nutrition: Staying hydrated and eating a balanced diet can help restore energy levels and overall health.

3. Open Communication: Encourage him to talk about his feelings regarding this issue. Open communication can alleviate anxiety and help him feel more comfortable.

4. Gradual Return to Activity: As he starts to feel better, he should gradually return to physical activity, including sexual activity, when he feels ready. This can help rebuild confidence.

5. Consult a Healthcare Professional: If the problem persists beyond the recovery from the illness, it would be advisable for him to consult a healthcare professional. A doctor can help determine if there are underlying issues that need to be addressed, such as hormonal imbalances or psychological factors.

6. Therapeutic Options: If ED continues, there are various treatment options available, including oral medications (like PDE5 inhibitors), counseling, or lifestyle changes that can improve erectile function.

It’s understandable that your boyfriend may feel embarrassed about seeking medical help, but it’s important to emphasize that ED is a common issue and can be effectively treated. Encouraging him to speak with a doctor can be a significant step towards recovery and reassurance.

In summary, while the sudden onset of erectile dysfunction after an illness can be concerning, it is often temporary and can be managed with appropriate care and support. Encourage your boyfriend to focus on his recovery and consider seeking professional advice if the issue does not resolve itself.

Hello: In response to your question, given your age, it is unlikely that you have organic erectile dysfunction. It is more likely related to your smoking, hypertension, and psychological issues. You may want to seek help from a relevant physician at an outpatient clinic.
