Nasal turbinate laser surgery
I have nasal turbinate hypertrophy and a slight deviation of the nasal septum.
I underwent laser treatment for the turbinates last August, and two months later, I started to snore, which has been getting progressively worse.
Could you please explain why this is happening? I did not snore before the surgery.

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology
Hello, theoretically, the nose has a minor influence on snoring, which is mostly related to the narrowing of the oropharynx or hypopharynx, and may not be directly related to surgery.
If snoring persists, it is advisable to seek medical attention for further examination.
Wishing you peace and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info
Post-laser turbinate surgery is a procedure aimed at reducing the size of the turbinates in the nasal passages to improve airflow and alleviate symptoms associated with nasal obstruction. While many patients experience relief from nasal congestion and improved breathing after surgery, some may develop new symptoms, such as snoring, post-surgery.
There are several potential reasons why snoring may occur after undergoing turbinate surgery, especially if it was not a problem prior to the procedure.
1. Changes in Nasal Anatomy: The surgery alters the structure of the nasal passages. While the goal is to enhance airflow, the changes can sometimes lead to altered airflow dynamics. If the airflow becomes turbulent due to the new anatomy, it can cause vibrations in the soft tissues of the throat, leading to snoring.
2. Residual Nasal Obstruction: Although the surgery aims to reduce nasal obstruction, there may still be residual issues. If the nasal passages are not fully clear or if there are other contributing factors (like allergies or sinus issues), this can lead to mouth breathing during sleep, which is a common cause of snoring.
3. Post-Operative Swelling: After surgery, it is common for some swelling to occur in the nasal passages. This swelling can temporarily narrow the airways, leading to increased resistance and potential snoring.
4. Weight Gain or Other Factors: If there has been any weight gain since the surgery, this can also contribute to snoring. Increased weight, especially around the neck, can lead to more pressure on the airways during sleep.
5. Sleep Position: Changes in sleep position can also influence snoring. If a person sleeps on their back, gravity can cause the tongue and soft tissues in the throat to collapse backward, leading to snoring.
6. Underlying Sleep Apnea: In some cases, the development of snoring post-surgery may indicate an underlying condition such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which may have been present but not previously diagnosed. OSA can lead to significant health issues if left untreated.
If you are experiencing increased snoring after turbinate surgery, it is important to consult with your ENT specialist or the surgeon who performed the procedure. They can evaluate your nasal passages, assess for any residual obstruction, and determine if there are other underlying issues contributing to the snoring.
In terms of management, your doctor may recommend several approaches:
- Nasal Steroids: To reduce any inflammation in the nasal passages.
- Allergy Management: If allergies are contributing to nasal congestion, appropriate management may help.
- Sleep Positioning: Adjusting your sleep position may help reduce snoring.
- Weight Management: If applicable, addressing any weight gain can also be beneficial.
- Further Evaluation: If snoring persists, a sleep study may be warranted to rule out sleep apnea.
In conclusion, while snoring after laser turbinate surgery can be concerning, it is often manageable with the right interventions. Open communication with your healthcare provider is key to addressing these new symptoms effectively.
