White Spots on Tonsils: When to Seek Treatment - Otolaryngology

There is a white spot on the tonsil?

Hello, doctor.
I am the person who asked question #94376.
I apologize for asking again.
Given that this situation has occurred after stopping medication and taking it three times, but each time only for about three days, is the duration of medication not long enough? Should I take antibiotics for a full seven days? Because now it seems to have returned to a condition similar to the one in the image (http://imgur.com/NrytyEB), and I coughed up a yellow phlegm this morning.
Does this indicate that it can resolve on its own?

Pinggu, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/01/19

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology

Hello, most cases should improve naturally.
If you have already taken antibiotics three times and currently have no sore throat or fever, it is recommended to drink plenty of water and continue to monitor your condition.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Cheng Jue-Yi, Director of the Department of Otolaryngology, Taoyuan General Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Understanding white spots on the tonsils can be concerning, as they may indicate various underlying conditions. The presence of white spots can be associated with infections, such as tonsillitis, strep throat, or even oral thrush, among other causes. It is crucial to monitor the symptoms and seek appropriate medical advice when necessary.

In your case, it seems that you have experienced recurrent symptoms despite multiple courses of medication. The duration of antibiotic treatment can significantly affect the outcome. Typically, a standard course of antibiotics for bacterial infections like strep throat is around 10 days. Shorter courses, such as three days, may not be sufficient to fully eradicate the infection, especially if it is caused by a more resistant strain of bacteria. Therefore, it may be beneficial to discuss with your healthcare provider the possibility of extending the duration of antibiotic therapy to seven days or more, depending on your specific situation.

Additionally, the presence of yellow phlegm upon waking can indicate that your body is attempting to clear mucus or infection from your respiratory system. This can be a normal response, but if it persists or is accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, difficulty swallowing, or significant pain, it is essential to seek medical attention. Your healthcare provider may want to perform a throat culture or rapid strep test to determine the exact cause of your symptoms and guide appropriate treatment.

It is also important to consider other factors that may contribute to your symptoms. For instance, allergies, irritants, or even gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can lead to throat irritation and the formation of white spots. If you have a history of allergies or other respiratory issues, discussing these with your doctor may provide additional insights into your condition.

In summary, if you are experiencing persistent white spots on your tonsils, especially after multiple short courses of antibiotics, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider. They may recommend a longer course of antibiotics, further diagnostic testing, or alternative treatments based on your symptoms and medical history. Always ensure that you communicate any new or worsening symptoms to your doctor, as this information is crucial for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
