Menstrual status after ectopic pregnancy surgery?

Hello, on November 11, 2015, I had an ectopic pregnancy, which led to the removal of my left fallopian tube.
I recovered well both physically and mentally after the surgery, and I got my period on December 6, 2015, which was bright red and light in flow.
However, this month, as of January 20, I still have not gotten my period, and I have confirmed through a pregnancy test that I am not pregnant.
Could you please tell me if having a fallopian tube removed can cause menstrual irregularities?

MAY, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/01/20

After an ectopic pregnancy and subsequent removal of the affected fallopian tube, it is not uncommon for women to experience changes in their menstrual cycles. The surgical procedure, which often involves the removal of the tube (salpingectomy), can lead to various physiological changes that may affect menstruation.
Firstly, it is important to understand that the menstrual cycle is regulated by a complex interplay of hormones produced by the ovaries, pituitary gland, and hypothalamus. The removal of a fallopian tube does not directly affect the ovaries, but it can influence the overall hormonal balance in the body. This can lead to irregularities in the menstrual cycle, especially in the months following the surgery.
In your case, you mentioned that your first period after the surgery was on December 6, and it was characterized by a bright red color and a lighter flow than usual. This could be a normal response to the surgical intervention. The body may take some time to adjust after such a significant event, and it is not unusual for the first few cycles post-surgery to be different in terms of flow, duration, and color.

The absence of your next menstrual period by January 20, despite confirming that you are not pregnant, could be attributed to several factors. Stress, hormonal fluctuations, and the physical recovery process from surgery can all contribute to changes in the menstrual cycle. Additionally, the body may still be adjusting to the loss of the fallopian tube, which can temporarily affect ovulation and, consequently, menstruation.

It is also worth noting that some women may experience a condition known as "post-surgical amenorrhea," where menstruation is delayed or absent for a period following surgery. This can be due to the body’s recovery process, hormonal imbalances, or even psychological factors such as stress and anxiety related to the surgery and its aftermath.

If you continue to experience irregularities in your menstrual cycle, or if you have concerns about your reproductive health, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider. They may recommend monitoring your menstrual cycle over the next few months to see if it stabilizes. In some cases, they may suggest hormonal evaluations or other diagnostic tests to rule out any underlying issues.

In summary, it is not uncommon for menstrual cycles to be irregular following ectopic pregnancy surgery. The body needs time to heal and adjust, and variations in menstrual flow and timing can occur. However, if you have ongoing concerns or if your menstrual irregularities persist, seeking medical advice is essential for your health and peace of mind.
