Can I get pregnant?

Hello doctor, I would like to ask about my wife.
On the last day of her menstrual period (Sunday), we had intercourse.
After removing the sanitary pad, there was nothing on it.
We used a condom during intercourse, but later there was unprotected penetration without ejaculation, although I'm not sure if any pre-ejaculate was released.
On Monday, she told me she was experiencing stomach discomfort, and on Thursday, she mentioned feeling dizzy and still having stomach issues (the dizziness only lasted one day, but she felt nauseous, which I thought might be related to her helping her grandmother with bowel movements, as she only felt discomfort after that).
I asked her if her breasts hurt, and she said the sides were painful when pressed, but there was no pain when pressed from the front, and there are no signs of breast swelling or darkening of the areola (I wondered if it could be related to a fibroid).
However, she has a lot of discharge that is clear and thick in consistency (her ovulation is expected next Monday; could this be the reason?).
I want to know if these are signs of pregnancy.
Is it possible to have early pregnancy symptoms just a few days after intercourse? What is the likelihood of pregnancy?

Weng Xiansheng, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/01/29

Typically, pregnancy symptoms do not appear that quickly.
To confirm whether you are pregnant, you can take a pregnancy test 18 days after sexual intercourse.
Sincerely, Dr.

When it comes to understanding the possibility of pregnancy and its associated symptoms, it's important to consider several factors, including timing, symptoms, and the nature of the sexual activity that occurred. Based on the details you've provided, let's break down the situation.

Firstly, you mentioned that your wife had her last menstrual period on a Sunday and that sexual intercourse occurred on that day, with the use of a condom. However, you also noted that there was some unprotected intercourse afterward, although you are unsure if there was any ejaculation. This is a critical point because pre-ejaculate fluid can contain sperm, and if it was present, there is a possibility of pregnancy.

Regarding the symptoms your wife is experiencing, such as stomach discomfort, dizziness, and nausea, these can be early signs of pregnancy, but they can also be attributed to other factors, such as stress, dietary changes, or even physical exertion (like the activity of helping with chores). The timing of her symptoms is also significant; typically, early pregnancy symptoms may start to appear a week or two after conception, which aligns with the timeline you provided.

The breast tenderness she described, particularly on the sides, can also be a sign of hormonal changes that occur during the menstrual cycle or early pregnancy. However, the absence of other signs such as breast swelling or darkening of the areolas makes it less likely that these symptoms are solely due to pregnancy.
As for the increased vaginal discharge you mentioned, clear and thick discharge can be normal and may be related to the ovulation cycle, especially if her ovulation is expected to occur the following week. This type of discharge is often associated with the fertile window, which can lead to confusion regarding whether it is a sign of pregnancy or just a normal physiological response.

In terms of the likelihood of pregnancy, it is difficult to provide a definitive answer without a pregnancy test. Generally, if there was unprotected intercourse around the time of ovulation, the chances of conception increase. If your wife misses her next period, it would be advisable for her to take a home pregnancy test for a more accurate assessment.

In summary, while some of the symptoms your wife is experiencing could be indicative of early pregnancy, they are not definitive. The best course of action would be to wait until she can take a pregnancy test, ideally after a missed period, to confirm whether she is pregnant. If she continues to experience discomfort or if her symptoms worsen, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation.
Additionally, if there are concerns about the possibility of pregnancy or if she is feeling unwell, seeking medical advice sooner rather than later can provide peace of mind and ensure that any necessary care is provided. Remember, early prenatal care is crucial for the health of both the mother and the developing fetus if pregnancy is confirmed.
