Itchy teeth after a dental cleaning?
Last week, I went for a teeth cleaning, and since then, I've been feeling an itch in my teeth and gums.
I went back to see the doctor, and he said there was no problem, just that some people are more sensitive.
However, it's been almost two weeks; is this normal? After the cleaning, I feel like there's a small gap between my two lower front teeth.
It only itches, and there's no swelling or bleeding! Thank you.

After a dental cleaning, the teeth and gums may become more sensitive due to the removal of tartar or dental stains.
If the tartar was located between the lower front teeth, you might notice that the spaces between the front teeth feel larger after the cleaning.
However, with good oral hygiene, the gums will gradually reduce inflammation, and the sensitivity symptoms will improve.

Experiencing itchiness in your teeth and gums after a dental cleaning can be concerning, especially if it persists for an extended period. While your dentist has reassured you that there is no immediate issue, it's important to understand the underlying reasons for this sensation and what you can do about it.
Firstly, dental cleanings involve the removal of plaque and tartar from your teeth, which can sometimes irritate the gums. This irritation can lead to a sensation of itchiness or discomfort, particularly if you have sensitive gums or if the cleaning was more intensive than usual. The tools used during the cleaning process, such as ultrasonic scalers or hand instruments, can sometimes cause minor abrasions or irritation to the gum tissue, resulting in a feeling of itchiness.
Another factor to consider is the possibility of gum inflammation. If you have gingivitis or any underlying gum disease, the cleaning may have exacerbated the sensitivity in your gums. This inflammation can lead to a feeling of itchiness, especially in areas where the gums are healing after the removal of plaque and tartar. It's essential to maintain good oral hygiene practices, including regular brushing and flossing, to help reduce inflammation and promote healing.
The sensation of having "small gaps" between your teeth after a cleaning is not uncommon. During the cleaning process, the removal of tartar can sometimes reveal spaces that were previously filled with buildup. This can create a feeling of increased space between your teeth, which may feel unusual or itchy. Over time, as your gums heal and adjust to the cleaning, this sensation should diminish.
If the itchiness persists beyond a few weeks or if you start to notice other symptoms such as swelling, bleeding, or pain, it would be advisable to follow up with your dentist. They can assess whether there is an underlying issue that needs to be addressed, such as an allergic reaction to the cleaning products used or a more significant gum problem.
To alleviate the itchiness in the meantime, consider the following tips:
1. Maintain Oral Hygiene: Continue to brush your teeth twice a day and floss daily. This will help keep your gums healthy and reduce irritation.
2. Use a Soft-Bristled Toothbrush: A soft-bristled toothbrush can be gentler on your gums and may help reduce sensitivity.
3. Rinse with Salt Water: A warm saltwater rinse can help soothe irritated gums and promote healing. Mix about half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and rinse your mouth gently.
4. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from tobacco products and limit your intake of acidic or spicy foods that may further irritate your gums.
5. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water can help keep your mouth moist and reduce any discomfort.
6. Consider Over-the-Counter Remedies: If the itchiness is bothersome, you might consider using an over-the-counter oral gel or rinse designed for sensitive gums.
In conclusion, while some itchiness after a dental cleaning can be normal, especially for those with sensitive gums, it should gradually improve. If it does not, or if you have any concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to your dentist for further evaluation. Your oral health is important, and addressing any lingering issues promptly can help ensure that your teeth and gums remain healthy and comfortable.
