I have discomfort in my left chest cavity, and it hurts when I breathe?
Hello Doctor: I had a cesarean section, and the changes in weather have caused my body to frequently experience issues.
I work at a hotel front desk, and the irregular early and late shifts have led to sleep deprivation and a lack of physical strength.
I have been feeling unwell for almost a week now.
In the mornings, I have difficulty breathing in my left chest, feeling as if it is being compressed, and it hurts when I breathe.
When I turn to my left side, it feels like something is stabbing me, and there is a noticeable sharp pain in my left shoulder blade.
I tried lying on my stomach, but the heaviness in my heart area made me very uncomfortable, and I also have headaches and dizziness.
My appetite has decreased significantly, and even my left side feels affected during breathing, which is painful.
Additionally, I have developed small bumps on the roof of my mouth, which seem to indicate heat in my body.
I have a dry cough without phlegm, and I cough whenever I inhale air or speak.
Is this fatigue from work, or could there be other underlying reasons? Please help me understand, Doctor.

Dr. Huang Ruiming reply Pulmonology
Ting: Hello, I feel discomfort in my left chest and pain when breathing.
Could this be related to a thoracic condition, or is it just a neuromuscular issue? I recommend visiting a thoracic specialist for a more thorough examination.
Thank you for your consultation, Huang Ruiming.

Understanding left chest discomfort can be complex, especially given the variety of potential causes ranging from musculoskeletal issues to more serious cardiac conditions. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a combination of symptoms that may be related to several factors, including physical strain from your job, sleep deprivation, and possibly stress.
Firstly, the left chest discomfort you are feeling, particularly the sensation of pressure and pain during breathing, could be indicative of a few different conditions. One possibility is musculoskeletal pain, which can arise from poor posture, especially if you are working long hours at a front desk and may not be using ergonomic practices. This type of pain can often feel sharp or stabbing and may worsen with certain movements or positions, such as lying on your left side.
Another potential cause could be related to anxiety or stress, which can manifest physically as chest tightness or discomfort. Given that you mentioned working rotating shifts and experiencing fatigue, it is plausible that stress and lack of sleep are contributing to your symptoms. Stress can lead to muscle tension, which may exacerbate feelings of discomfort in the chest area.
However, it is crucial to consider cardiac-related issues, especially since you are experiencing symptoms like difficulty breathing, heaviness in the chest, and pain radiating to the shoulder. While you are relatively young, it is essential to rule out any potential heart problems, particularly if there is a family history of cardiovascular disease or if you have other risk factors such as smoking or high cholesterol.
Your symptoms of dizziness and decreased appetite could also be linked to a variety of conditions, including anxiety, fatigue, or even gastrointestinal issues. The presence of bumps in your mouth could suggest an inflammatory response, possibly due to stress or a viral infection, which might also contribute to your overall feeling of malaise.
Given the complexity of your symptoms, it is advisable to seek a thorough evaluation from a healthcare professional. They may recommend several diagnostic tests, including an electrocardiogram (ECG) to assess heart function, blood tests to check for markers of inflammation or infection, and possibly imaging studies to rule out any structural issues in the chest or abdomen.
In the meantime, consider implementing some self-care strategies to help alleviate your symptoms. These could include:
1. Stress Management: Engage in relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, or yoga to help reduce stress levels.
2. Ergonomics: Ensure your workstation is set up to promote good posture. Take regular breaks to stretch and move around to prevent muscle tension.
3. Sleep Hygiene: Aim for a consistent sleep schedule and create a restful environment to improve the quality of your sleep.
4. Hydration and Nutrition: Stay hydrated and maintain a balanced diet to support your overall health.
5. Seek Support: If your symptoms persist or worsen, do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare provider for further evaluation and management.
In summary, while your symptoms may be related to physical strain and stress, it is essential to rule out any serious underlying conditions. A comprehensive evaluation will help determine the appropriate course of action to address your discomfort and improve your overall well-being.
