Are these symptoms of pregnancy?
Dear Doctor: My girlfriend's menstrual cycles for the past two months were 35 and 31 days, respectively, with her last period starting on June 19.
We had sexual intercourse on July 8, but there was only friction at the vaginal opening, and no ejaculation occurred.
On July 8 and July 9, my girlfriend reported having a lot of discharge, which was not cervical mucus but rather similar to vaginal secretions after sexual activity.
We had intercourse again on July 10, with penetration lasting only about 20-30 seconds, and again, there was no ejaculation.
On July 10, 11, and 12, my girlfriend experienced bleeding; on July 11 and 12, the bleeding resembled menstrual flow but was much lighter and intermittent, and she did not have any menstrual discomfort (she usually experiences menstrual cramps).
Could this indicate a pregnancy? Thank you.

Dr. Dai Qihan reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Your girlfriend's last menstrual period was on June 19, and you will need to wait to perform a urine pregnancy test to confirm if she is pregnant.
Please remind her to keep track of her menstrual cycle.
If her period does not return to normal in the future, she should go directly to a gynecology clinic for evaluation.
May God bless you.

More Info
When considering whether the symptoms described could indicate pregnancy, it is essential to understand the various factors that contribute to conception and the early signs of pregnancy. Based on the information provided, your girlfriend's menstrual cycle has varied between 31 to 35 days, with her last period starting on June 19. The sexual encounters occurred on July 8 and July 10, with no ejaculation inside the vagina. Following these encounters, she experienced unusual bleeding on July 10, 11, and 12, which resembled a lighter menstrual flow but was not accompanied by the typical discomfort she usually experiences during her period.
Firstly, it's important to note that pregnancy can occur even with withdrawal methods (pulling out) if pre-ejaculate fluid contains sperm. While the chances are lower without ejaculation, they are not zero. The timing of the sexual encounters is also crucial. If her ovulation occurred shortly after the sexual activity, there is a possibility of conception.
The bleeding your girlfriend experienced could be indicative of several things. It might be implantation bleeding, which can occur when a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining, typically around 6 to 12 days after conception. This type of bleeding is usually lighter and shorter than a regular period. However, it could also be a result of hormonal fluctuations, stress, or other factors unrelated to pregnancy.
Given that your girlfriend's bleeding was lighter and different from her usual menstrual flow, it is advisable to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are designed to detect the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. For the most accurate results, it is best to wait until at least the first day of her expected period or a week after the missed period to take the test.
If the home pregnancy test is positive, it is recommended that she schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider for confirmation and to discuss prenatal care. If the test is negative but her period does not arrive, she should consult a healthcare professional to explore other potential causes for her symptoms.
In summary, while the symptoms described could suggest pregnancy, they are not definitive. The best course of action is to take a pregnancy test and consult with a healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance. Early prenatal care is crucial for the health of both the mother and the developing fetus, should pregnancy be confirmed.
