Excessive Sweet-Smelling Discharge: What Could It Mean? - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Excessive secretion with a sweet taste?

Hello doctor, I have been experiencing excessive vaginal discharge for the past few months.
The discharge is white, sometimes yellow, and has a sweet odor.
What could be the issue? Previously, I visited a gynecologist for symptoms of a bacterial infection, where the discharge was yellow-green and had a fishy odor (it was hard to distinguish).
I also had itching in the vulvar area.
Are my current symptoms related to my previous condition?

Yu, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/02/03

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, based on your description of symptoms, it may be similar to a previous case of bacterial vaginosis.
Common symptoms include: 1.
Abnormal color of vaginal discharge (such as yellow or grayish-white).
2.
Foul-smelling vaginal discharge (such as a fishy odor).
3.
Possible accompanying burning sensation or itching.

Recommended treatment methods: Generally, oral antibiotics are prescribed for 3-7 days, and it is advised to avoid excessive alcohol consumption during the treatment period.
Symptoms of discomfort in the vulva can be alleviated with topical ointments.

Prevention methods include: 1.
Maintaining a regular lifestyle, a balanced diet, and appropriate exercise to enhance immunity.
2.
Using condoms can reduce the chances of recurrence.
3.
Prophylactic medications or vaginal washes may also help reduce the risk of infection.

If symptoms persist or recur, it is advisable to consult a physician for examination and treatment.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health.

Excessive sweet-smelling discharge can be concerning and may indicate various underlying health issues. Based on your description, it seems that you have experienced changes in your vaginal discharge over the past few months, with a notable sweet smell, and a history of bacterial infections that presented with yellow-green discharge and a fishy odor.
Firstly, it's important to understand that vaginal discharge can vary in color, consistency, and odor due to a variety of factors, including hormonal changes, infections, and other medical conditions. Normal vaginal discharge is typically clear or milky white and may have a mild odor. However, any significant changes in these characteristics can be a sign of an underlying issue.

The sweet-smelling discharge you are experiencing could be related to several factors:
1. Bacterial Vaginosis (BV): This is a common condition caused by an imbalance of the normal bacteria in the vagina. While BV typically presents with a fishy odor, some women may experience a sweet smell. It is often accompanied by a thin, grayish-white discharge.

2. Yeast Infection: A yeast infection can cause a thick, white discharge that may resemble cottage cheese and is often accompanied by itching and irritation. While yeast infections typically do not have a sweet smell, some women report changes in odor.

3. Diabetes: If you have uncontrolled diabetes, your body may produce excess sugar in your urine, which can lead to sweet-smelling discharge. This is due to the presence of glucose in the urine, which can also promote yeast infections.

4. Hormonal Changes: Fluctuations in hormones, such as those occurring during menstruation, pregnancy, or menopause, can affect the characteristics of vaginal discharge.
5. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Certain STIs, such as trichomoniasis, can cause changes in discharge, including odor and color. It’s essential to get tested if you suspect an STI.

Given your history of bacterial infections and the current symptoms, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare provider, preferably a gynecologist, for a thorough evaluation. They may perform a pelvic exam, take samples of the discharge for laboratory analysis, and possibly conduct tests for STIs or other infections.

In the meantime, here are some general recommendations to help manage your symptoms:
- Maintain Good Hygiene: Keep the genital area clean and dry. Avoid using scented soaps or douches, as these can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria.

- Wear Breathable Fabrics: Opt for cotton underwear and avoid tight-fitting clothing to reduce moisture buildup.

- Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water can help flush out toxins and may assist in maintaining a healthy balance of vaginal flora.

- Monitor Your Symptoms: Keep track of any additional symptoms, such as itching, burning, or changes in color and consistency of the discharge, and report these to your doctor.

In conclusion, while sweet-smelling discharge can be benign, it can also indicate an underlying health issue that requires attention. Prompt medical evaluation is essential to determine the cause and appropriate treatment. Your health and well-being are paramount, so don’t hesitate to seek help from a medical professional.
