Rectal bleeding

I have been experiencing a sharp pain during bowel movements for the past few days.
After finishing, I noticed that the originally clear water in the toilet has turned bright red, and there is also some fresh blood on the toilet paper.
Could this be hemorrhoids?

Xing, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/02/04

Dr. Ke Fangxu reply Surgery

This situation is likely indicative of hemorrhoidal bleeding.
As long as there is no further bleeding, it should not be a concern.
It is advisable to avoid constipation during this period and to shorten the time spent on bowel movements.
Warm sitz baths may also help alleviate symptoms.
You can purchase over-the-counter hemorrhoidal suppositories for use.
It is best not to take stool softeners indiscriminately; at this age, increasing dietary fiber and fluid intake should be sufficient.
If bleeding persists, it is recommended to consult a physician for evaluation.

More Info

Rectal bleeding can be concerning, and your symptoms warrant careful consideration. The presence of bright red blood in the toilet water and on toilet paper after a bowel movement is often associated with hemorrhoids, but it can also indicate other conditions. Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the lower rectum or anus that can cause pain, itching, and bleeding, especially during bowel movements. The blood from hemorrhoids is usually bright red, which aligns with your description.

However, it is crucial to note that rectal bleeding can also result from other causes, such as anal fissures, diverticular disease, colorectal polyps, or even more serious conditions like colorectal cancer. Anal fissures, which are small tears in the lining of the anus, can cause sharp pain and bleeding during bowel movements. Diverticulosis, a condition where small pouches form in the colon wall, can also lead to bleeding.

Given your symptoms of pain during bowel movements and the presence of blood, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional for a proper evaluation. They may perform a physical examination and possibly recommend further tests, such as a colonoscopy, to determine the exact cause of the bleeding. This is particularly important if you have any additional symptoms, such as changes in bowel habits, weight loss, or persistent abdominal pain.

In summary, while hemorrhoids are a common cause of rectal bleeding, they are not the only possibility. It is advisable to seek medical attention to rule out any serious conditions and to receive appropriate treatment based on the diagnosis. Early intervention can help prevent complications and ensure better outcomes.
