Stool size has decreased?

Hello doctor, about two weeks ago, I had anal intercourse with my boyfriend.
After that, I started experiencing irregular bowel movements; I have little urge to defecate, and when I do go, my stools are much smaller, about the size of a finger, and they are soft and multiple, which is a significant difference from my usual one or two banana-shaped stools.
Since it was my first time, I was quite anxious.
I tried using a laxative, and while my stools became slightly larger, they are still softer.
I consulted a doctor, but they said it hasn't been a month yet and it might just be temporary, advising me to observe further.
I would like to ask the doctor what this situation might be.

There should be no major issues, and it is not related to anal intercourse.
Changes in stool consistency are often associated with dietary content.
It is recommended to increase your intake of dietary fiber and fluids.
You may also consider drinking yogurt to replenish gut bacteria.

Experiencing changes in bowel movements after anal intercourse can be concerning, especially if it is your first time engaging in this activity. It’s important to understand that the rectum and anus are sensitive areas, and any trauma or pressure can lead to temporary changes in bowel habits.
Firstly, the changes you are describing—having smaller, softer stools and difficulty with bowel movements—could be attributed to several factors. Anal intercourse can sometimes cause irritation or minor trauma to the anal canal and rectum, which may lead to discomfort during bowel movements. The rectum is not typically used for penetration, and introducing something into this area can lead to muscle tension or spasms, which might affect how the bowel functions.
Moreover, the psychological aspect of your experience should not be overlooked. Anxiety or stress about the experience, especially if it was your first time, can also impact bowel habits. The gut-brain connection is well-documented; stress can lead to changes in gut motility, potentially resulting in softer stools or changes in frequency.

The fact that you have tried using digestive aids and noticed some improvement suggests that your body is responding to the situation. However, if the changes persist beyond a few weeks, it may be worth considering other factors. For instance, dietary changes, hydration levels, and overall stress management can all play significant roles in bowel health.
It’s also important to consider the possibility of anal fissures or hemorrhoids, which can occur after anal intercourse. These conditions can cause pain and lead to changes in bowel habits as well. If you experience any bleeding, severe pain, or if your symptoms do not improve, it would be advisable to seek further evaluation from a healthcare professional.

In terms of management, here are some recommendations:
1. Hydration and Diet: Ensure you are drinking plenty of water and consuming a fiber-rich diet to help promote regular bowel movements. Foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can aid in achieving a more normal stool consistency.

2. Relaxation Techniques: If anxiety is a factor, consider relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or gentle exercise to help reduce stress levels.

3. Gradual Reintroduction: If you and your partner wish to continue exploring anal intercourse, consider taking it slow. Using plenty of lubrication and ensuring that both partners are comfortable can help minimize discomfort and potential injury.

4. Follow-Up: Since your doctor suggested monitoring the situation for a month, it’s wise to keep track of your symptoms. If you notice no improvement or if your symptoms worsen, don’t hesitate to return to your healthcare provider for further evaluation.

In summary, while it’s common to experience temporary changes in bowel habits after anal intercourse, it’s essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If you have any concerns or if your symptoms persist, seeking further medical advice is always a prudent step. Your health and comfort should always come first, and open communication with your healthcare provider can help ensure you receive the appropriate care.
