Skin issues
Recently, my toes on both feet have been itchy and swollen.
I'm not sure what the cause is; it looks like the marks from mosquito bites.
Could it be from some kind of insect or flea bite? Is it contagious? Thank you.

Without actually seeing the lesion, it cannot be confirmed.
If it is very concerning, it is recommended to have a dermatologist evaluate it to determine the issue.

More Info
Itchy and swollen toes can be caused by a variety of factors, and it's important to understand the potential causes and concerns associated with these symptoms. Based on your description, it sounds like you are experiencing localized inflammation, which could be due to several reasons.
1. Allergic Reactions: One common cause of itchy and swollen toes is an allergic reaction. This could be due to contact with irritants such as certain soaps, detergents, or even materials in shoes. If you have recently changed any products or materials that come into contact with your feet, this could be a potential cause.
2. Insect Bites: As you mentioned, the symptoms resemble those of insect bites, such as mosquito bites. Insect bites can cause localized swelling, redness, and itching. If you have been in an area where insects are prevalent, it is possible that you have been bitten.
3. Fungal Infections: Another possibility is a fungal infection, such as athlete's foot, which can cause itching and swelling between the toes. Fungal infections thrive in warm, moist environments, so if your feet have been sweaty or confined in tight shoes, this could be a contributing factor.
4. Dermatitis: Conditions like contact dermatitis can also lead to itchy and swollen skin. This occurs when the skin reacts to a substance it has come into contact with, leading to inflammation and discomfort.
5. Gout or Arthritis: In some cases, swollen toes can be a sign of gout or other forms of arthritis. Gout is characterized by sudden and severe pain, redness, and swelling in the joints, often affecting the big toe. If the swelling is accompanied by pain, this could be a concern.
6. Infections: Bacterial infections can also cause swelling and redness. If there is an open wound or cut on your toe, bacteria could enter and cause an infection, leading to swelling and discomfort.
Regarding your concern about whether this condition is contagious, it largely depends on the underlying cause. Insect bites are not contagious, while fungal infections can be spread through direct contact or contaminated surfaces. If the cause is an allergic reaction or dermatitis, these conditions are also not contagious.
Recommendations:
- Observation: Monitor the symptoms closely. If the swelling and itching persist or worsen, it is advisable to seek medical attention.
- Avoid Scratching: Try to avoid scratching the affected area, as this can lead to further irritation or infection.
- Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress can help reduce swelling and alleviate itching.
- Topical Treatments: Over-the-counter antihistamines or hydrocortisone cream may provide relief from itching and inflammation.
- Consult a Doctor: If the symptoms do not improve within a few days, or if you develop additional symptoms such as fever, increased redness, or pain, it is important to consult a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
In conclusion, while itchy and swollen toes can be concerning, understanding the potential causes can help you address the issue effectively. If you are unsure of the cause or if the symptoms persist, seeking medical advice is always the best course of action.
