Depressed rib?
Recently, I have felt a depression in the second rib from the bottom when counting upwards, and it hurts when I press on it.
What could this be?

It may be inflammation at the junction of the rib and cartilage, which usually improves with a few days of rest.
This condition is often related to overexertion or trauma.
If it does not improve, it is advisable to consult a physician.

Understanding pain and indentation in the second rib can be a complex issue, as it may involve various anatomical structures and potential underlying conditions. The second rib, located just below the first rib, plays a crucial role in the structure of the thoracic cage and is connected to the sternum via the costal cartilage. Pain and indentation in this area can arise from several causes, including trauma, inflammation, or musculoskeletal disorders.
One common cause of pain and indentation in the rib area is trauma. If you have experienced any recent injury, such as a fall or a direct blow to the chest, this could lead to rib contusions or even fractures, which may not always be visible on initial X-rays. In some cases, the soft tissues surrounding the rib cage, including muscles and ligaments, can become strained or sprained, leading to localized pain and tenderness.
Another potential cause is costochondritis, an inflammation of the cartilage that connects the ribs to the sternum. This condition can result in sharp pain, especially when pressing on the affected area. Costochondritis is often exacerbated by physical activity, deep breathing, or certain movements, and it may be mistaken for a more serious condition, such as a heart problem.
Muscle strain is also a possibility. The intercostal muscles, which are located between the ribs, can become strained due to overexertion, heavy lifting, or even prolonged coughing. This strain can lead to localized pain and discomfort, particularly when pressure is applied to the area.
In some cases, referred pain from other structures, such as the spine or internal organs, may manifest as pain in the rib area. Conditions affecting the cervical or thoracic spine, such as herniated discs or degenerative disc disease, can lead to nerve irritation and pain that radiates to the rib cage. Additionally, issues with the lungs or pleura, such as infections or pleurisy, may also cause discomfort in the rib area.
If you are experiencing pain and indentation in the second rib, it is essential to seek medical evaluation. A healthcare professional will likely perform a physical examination and may order imaging studies, such as X-rays or MRI, to assess for any underlying issues. Treatment options will depend on the underlying cause of your symptoms. For instance, if the pain is due to inflammation, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may be recommended to alleviate pain and reduce swelling. Physical therapy may also be beneficial to strengthen the surrounding muscles and improve mobility.
In summary, pain and indentation in the second rib can result from various causes, including trauma, inflammation, muscle strain, or referred pain from other structures. It is crucial to consult with a healthcare provider for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan. Early intervention can help prevent further complications and promote recovery.
