Mild pain between the left thigh's anterior side and the hip bone?

Hello Doctor, I have been doing the Zheng Duoyan exercise every day during my winter break.
About five days ago, I woke up feeling a slight pain in the front of my left thigh near the hip joint.
It hurts a bit when I lift my thigh while sitting or when I walk.
The pain feels somewhat like a strain or inflammation, but I'm not sure.
I have experienced similar sensations a few times before, but I wasn't doing the Zheng Duoyan exercises then, and I'm unclear about the cause.
Those previous instances usually resolved in about one to two weeks.
This time, the sensation is similar and in the same location, so I would like to ask about the possible causes and relief methods, and whether I need to seek medical attention.
Thank you!

Dr. Shi Guozheng reply Orthopedics

It is most likely a muscle or tendon strain.
Rest for a few days and apply heat.
If it does not improve, you will need to see a doctor.

More Info

Understanding mild pain in the front of the left thigh near the hip can be quite complex, as it may stem from various underlying causes. Based on your description, it seems that the pain arises when you engage in activities such as lifting your thigh while sitting or walking. This type of discomfort can often be associated with muscle strain, tendonitis, or even issues related to the hip joint itself.

Possible Causes
1. Muscle Strain: Given that you have been actively engaging in exercises like the 鄭多燕 routine, it’s possible that you may have strained the hip flexor muscles. These muscles, including the iliopsoas, are responsible for lifting your thigh and bending at the hip. Overuse or sudden increases in physical activity can lead to micro-tears in these muscles, resulting in pain.

2. Tendonitis: Inflammation of the tendons that attach muscles to bones can also cause pain in the hip area. This condition often develops gradually and can be exacerbated by repetitive movements, such as those involved in your exercise routine.

3. Hip Joint Issues: Conditions such as hip bursitis (inflammation of the bursa) or early signs of osteoarthritis can also manifest as pain in the front of the thigh. These conditions may not always present with obvious symptoms but can lead to discomfort during movement.

4. Referred Pain: Sometimes, pain in the thigh can be referred from other areas, such as the lower back or pelvis. If there are underlying issues with the lumbar spine, they may manifest as pain in the thigh.

Symptoms to Monitor
- Pain Intensity: Is the pain mild, moderate, or severe? Does it worsen with activity?
- Range of Motion: Are you able to move your leg freely, or do you experience stiffness?
- Swelling or Bruising: Is there any visible swelling or bruising in the area?
- Duration: How long has the pain persisted? If it lasts more than a couple of weeks without improvement, it may warrant further investigation.

Management and Relief
1. Rest: Allow your body to recover by reducing activities that exacerbate the pain. Avoid high-impact exercises until the pain subsides.

2. Ice Therapy: Applying ice to the affected area for 15-20 minutes several times a day can help reduce inflammation and numb the pain.

3. Gentle Stretching: Engage in gentle stretching exercises for the hip flexors and quadriceps. This can help alleviate tightness and improve flexibility.

4. Over-the-Counter Pain Relief: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen can help manage pain and reduce inflammation.

5. Physical Therapy: If the pain persists, consider consulting a physical therapist. They can provide tailored exercises to strengthen the hip muscles and improve flexibility.

When to Seek Medical Attention
If the pain does not improve with home care within a week or two, or if you experience severe pain, swelling, or difficulty walking, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional. They may recommend imaging studies, such as an X-ray or MRI, to rule out any serious underlying conditions.

In summary, while mild pain in the front of the left thigh near the hip can often resolve with conservative measures, it’s essential to listen to your body. If symptoms persist or worsen, seeking medical advice is crucial to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment.
