Yellow discharge
Hello Dr.
Tian: Due to a miscarriage at 8 weeks with a blighted ovum, I underwent a dilation and curettage (D&C) procedure, and my menstruation has not yet returned.
However, over the past two days (February 14 and 15), I have noticed a significant amount of thick, sticky yellow discharge when wiping after urination.
It takes two to three wipes to clean it up, but there is no unusual odor or itching.
I started taking traditional Chinese medicine at the beginning of February to regulate my body (focusing on gynecological and liver-kidney aspects).
Could this be related to the herbal medicine? I have never experienced this much yellow discharge before, and I am a bit concerned.
Additionally, the doctor mentioned that menstruation typically returns about one to one and a half months after the procedure.
How long should I wait before seeing a doctor if my period still hasn't come? Thank you, Dr.
Tian, for taking the time to respond.

If medication affects the hormones in the body, it may impact the vaginal pH, subsequently influencing the color and quantity of secretions.
If there are concerns, it is advisable to visit a gynecology clinic for examination.
After an abortion, the timing of menstruation can vary depending on individual constitution.
Generally, it is recommended to consult a gynecologist if menstruation does not occur for three months.

More Info
After a miscarriage, it is common for women to experience various changes in their menstrual cycle and vaginal discharge. The presence of yellow discharge, especially if it is thick and sticky, can be concerning, but it is important to consider several factors before jumping to conclusions.
Firstly, the yellow color of the discharge could be due to a few reasons. One possibility is that it is a normal physiological response as your body adjusts after the miscarriage. The hormonal changes that occur can lead to variations in discharge consistency and color. It is also possible that the yellow discharge is related to the use of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) you mentioned. Some herbal remedies can influence bodily secretions, and it may be worth discussing this with the practitioner who prescribed the TCM to understand its effects better.
Another important consideration is the possibility of an infection. While you noted that there is no accompanying odor or itching, which are common signs of infection, it is still essential to monitor the situation. If the discharge persists, changes in color or consistency, or if you develop any new symptoms such as fever, abdominal pain, or an unusual odor, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare provider. They may want to perform a pelvic examination or tests to rule out any infections or complications.
Regarding your menstrual cycle, it is typical for menstruation to resume within 4 to 6 weeks after a miscarriage, but this can vary significantly from person to person. Factors such as stress, hormonal balance, and overall health can influence how quickly your cycle returns to normal. If your period does not return within 6 weeks, it is advisable to follow up with your healthcare provider. They can assess whether there are any underlying issues that need to be addressed, such as retained products of conception or hormonal imbalances.
In summary, while yellow discharge after a miscarriage can be concerning, it is not uncommon and can be attributed to various factors, including hormonal changes and the effects of herbal treatments. However, if the discharge continues or if you experience any additional symptoms, it is essential to seek medical advice. Regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider are crucial during this time to ensure your recovery is progressing well and to address any concerns you may have. Your health and well-being are paramount, and open communication with your healthcare team will help you navigate this period more comfortably.
