Three weeks after hemorrhoid surgery?

Hello doctor, I would like to ask a question.
I am currently in the third week after undergoing hemorrhoid surgery, and I have a concern.
There are two granulation tissue formations near my anus.
After researching, I found that they will gradually shrink and disappear.
However, I have noticed an increase in discharge during this third week, which has a somewhat milky white appearance.
I would like to know if this discharge is pus or if it is a normal phenomenon?

Xiao Hao, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/02/16

After undergoing hemorrhoid surgery, it's common for patients to experience a variety of symptoms as they recover. At three weeks post-surgery, the presence of granulation tissue, which appears as small lumps or "fleshy" areas around the surgical site, is not unusual. Granulation tissue is part of the healing process and typically shrinks and resolves over time. However, it is essential to monitor these changes to ensure they are part of normal healing and not indicative of complications.

Regarding the increased discharge you are experiencing, a whitish discharge can be a normal part of the healing process. This discharge may contain mucus, which is produced by the body to help protect and lubricate the healing tissue. However, if the discharge is accompanied by a foul odor, increased pain, or other concerning symptoms such as fever, it could indicate an infection or other complications. In such cases, it is crucial to consult your healthcare provider for further evaluation.

In the context of post-operative care, here are some important considerations:
1. Hygiene: Maintaining proper hygiene around the surgical site is vital. Gently cleaning the area with mild soap and water can help prevent infection. Avoid using harsh soaps or scrubbing the area.

2. Diet: A high-fiber diet can help prevent constipation, which is crucial after hemorrhoid surgery. Straining during bowel movements can put pressure on the surgical site and hinder healing. Consider incorporating fruits, vegetables, and whole grains into your diet, and stay well-hydrated.

3. Pain Management: It's normal to experience some discomfort after surgery. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, can help manage pain. However, always follow your surgeon's recommendations regarding medication.

4. Activity Level: Gradually increasing your activity level is important, but avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activities until your doctor gives you the green light. Gentle walking can promote circulation and aid in recovery.

5. Follow-Up Appointments: Regular follow-up appointments with your surgeon are essential to monitor your healing progress. During these visits, you can discuss any concerns, including changes in discharge or the appearance of the surgical site.

6. Signs of Complications: Be vigilant for signs of complications, such as excessive bleeding, severe pain, or signs of infection (redness, swelling, warmth, or discharge that is yellow or green and has a foul odor). If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

In summary, while some degree of discharge and the presence of granulation tissue can be normal at three weeks post-hemorrhoid surgery, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If you have any doubts or if your symptoms worsen, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation and ensure that your recovery continues smoothly.
