Want to have a baby?

Hello, I would like to ask about my situation.
I had a natural miscarriage on December 23 of last year, and my period came on January 20 of this year.
I consulted a doctor who confirmed that my uterus was clear because I want to conceive, so the doctor started me on folic acid.
My previous menstrual cycles were very regular, but as of February 20, my period has not arrived.
I have taken a pregnancy test, but it was negative.
During this time, I have had sexual intercourse with my husband (with ejaculation inside).
Is there a possibility of pregnancy?

Qing, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/02/20

Dr. Lin Manying reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

If menstruation does not occur, it is recommended to take another test in three days.

Hello! Thank you for your question regarding your chances of pregnancy after a miscarriage. It’s understandable to have concerns and questions following such an experience, especially when you are eager to conceive again.

Firstly, it’s important to note that after a miscarriage, many women can conceive again relatively quickly. The body often returns to its normal menstrual cycle within a few weeks to a couple of months after the miscarriage, as you have experienced. Your last menstrual period was on January 20, and since you mentioned that your cycles were previously regular, it’s reasonable to expect that ovulation could occur again soon after your period resumes.

In your case, since you have been trying to conceive since your last period and have had unprotected intercourse, there is indeed a possibility of becoming pregnant. However, the fact that you have not yet seen your period since January 20 and have tested negative for pregnancy could indicate a few things. It’s possible that your body is still adjusting after the miscarriage, which can sometimes lead to irregular cycles or delayed ovulation. Stress, hormonal changes, and other factors can also play a role in this.

If you are concerned about the absence of your period and the negative pregnancy test, it may be a good idea to consult with your healthcare provider. They can perform a more thorough evaluation, including blood tests to check your hormone levels, to determine if you are indeed pregnant or if there is another underlying issue affecting your menstrual cycle.

In terms of your health and preparation for pregnancy, continuing to take folic acid is a great step. Folic acid is crucial for fetal development and can help prevent neural tube defects. Additionally, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, regular exercise, and avoiding harmful substances, is beneficial for both your health and the health of a potential pregnancy.

If you do not get your period soon or if you continue to have negative pregnancy tests but suspect you might be pregnant, your doctor may recommend a transvaginal ultrasound to check for any retained tissue from the miscarriage or other issues that might be affecting your cycle.

In summary, while there is a possibility of becoming pregnant after a miscarriage, it’s essential to monitor your body’s signals and consult with your healthcare provider if you have concerns about your menstrual cycle or pregnancy status. They can provide personalized advice and support based on your specific situation. Remember, it’s important to be patient with your body as it heals and adjusts after a miscarriage. Wishing you the best of luck on your journey to conception!
