Yellow-Green Discharge After Abortion: Is It Normal or Infected? - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Yellow-green discharge seven to eight days after abortion?

I had an abortion on February 17, approximately 10 weeks along.
After the procedure, I didn't experience much lochia, but I did have an increase in discharge that was yellow-green in color with a mild odor.
A few days ago, I had some itching, but by February 20, it had improved.
However, I have been experiencing a dull, stabbing pain in my lower abdomen.
During my follow-up appointment on February 22, the doctor mentioned that there was still some blood-tinged fluid and reassured me that it wasn't a major concern.
I researched online and found that it could indicate inflammation.
Could you please tell me if this is indeed inflammation or if it falls within the normal range?

Hello, it is generally okay to have a small amount of bleeding one week after surgery.
You can monitor the situation.
However, if you experience any discomfort, it is advisable to consult a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

After an abortion, it is not uncommon to experience various types of vaginal discharge, including yellow-green discharge. However, the characteristics of the discharge, along with accompanying symptoms, can provide important clues about your health status.

In your case, you mentioned that the discharge is yellow-green in color, has a mild odor, and was initially accompanied by itching, which later subsided. You also reported experiencing a dull, stabbing pain in your lower abdomen and that during a follow-up visit, your doctor noted some residual blood. While some discharge is normal after an abortion, especially in the first few weeks, the specific color and accompanying symptoms can indicate a potential infection or other complications.

Yellow-green discharge can often be associated with bacterial vaginosis or sexually transmitted infections (STIs), such as trichomoniasis. These conditions can cause inflammation and may lead to more severe symptoms if left untreated. The presence of itching and discomfort, particularly in the early days following your abortion, raises the possibility of an infection. It is also worth noting that any unusual discharge, especially if it changes in color, consistency, or odor, should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

The fact that your doctor mentioned there was "nothing major" to worry about is reassuring, but it is essential to remain vigilant. If the discharge persists, changes in character, or if you experience increased pain, fever, or any other concerning symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly. Infections can lead to more significant complications if not addressed, including pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which can affect future fertility.

In terms of what is considered normal after an abortion, it is typical to have some bleeding or spotting for a few weeks. The discharge may vary in color and consistency, transitioning from bright red to brownish or pinkish as healing occurs. However, any persistent yellow-green discharge, especially with an odor or associated symptoms like itching or pain, should be investigated further.

To summarize, while some yellow-green discharge can occur after an abortion, the presence of itching and abdominal pain suggests that you should consult with your healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. They may recommend tests to rule out infections and provide appropriate treatment if necessary. It is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your reproductive health. Regular follow-ups and open communication with your healthcare provider are key to ensuring a smooth recovery and addressing any concerns that may arise.
