Struggling with Acne for Six Years: Seeking Effective Solutions - Dermatology

Having acne on the face for an extended period of time?

Hello! I have been experiencing acne for six years, starting from the second year of junior high school, and there are no signs of improvement.
The breakouts usually occur on the right side of my cheek, between my eyebrows (where a particularly large pimple keeps recurring), my chin, and my back.
What can I do to improve this situation? I usually go to bed around 12:30 to 1:30 AM, and I often drink sugary beverages.
Does this affect my skin? Also, how can I get rid of acne scars? I've tried many whitening products, but they haven't worked.
Thank you.

If the lesion cannot be confirmed without direct observation, it is advisable to seek medical attention as soon as possible if it is causing significant concern.

Dealing with acne for an extended period, such as six years, can be incredibly frustrating and disheartening. It’s important to understand that acne is a multifactorial condition influenced by various factors including hormones, genetics, diet, and skincare routines. Here’s a comprehensive approach to help you manage your acne and improve your skin condition.

Understanding Acne
Acne occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. This can lead to the formation of pimples, blackheads, and cysts. The areas you mentioned—your cheeks, forehead, chin, and back—are common sites for acne due to the density of sebaceous (oil) glands. Hormonal fluctuations, particularly during puberty, can exacerbate acne, but it can persist into adulthood for many individuals.

Lifestyle Factors
1. Sleep Patterns: Your sleep schedule (sleeping around 12:30 AM to 1:30 AM) may not provide your body with adequate rest. Lack of sleep can increase stress levels, which may worsen acne. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night.

2. Diet: Your mention of frequently consuming sugary drinks can significantly impact your skin. High glycemic index foods and sugary beverages can lead to increased insulin levels, which may trigger acne. Consider reducing your intake of sugary drinks and processed foods. Instead, focus on a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, like fish, can also help reduce inflammation.

3. Hydration: Drinking plenty of water is essential for maintaining skin health. Aim for at least 8 glasses of water a day to keep your skin hydrated and help flush out toxins.

Skincare Routine
1. Cleansing: Use a gentle, non-comedogenic cleanser twice daily to remove excess oil and dirt. Avoid harsh scrubs that can irritate the skin and worsen acne.

2. Topical Treatments: Over-the-counter products containing benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or alpha hydroxy acids can be effective in treating acne. These ingredients help to unclog pores and reduce inflammation.
3. Moisturizing: Even if your skin is oily, it’s important to use a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer to maintain hydration without clogging pores.

4. Sun Protection: Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily to protect your skin from UV damage, which can worsen acne scars.

Professional Treatments
If over-the-counter treatments are not effective, consider consulting a dermatologist. They may recommend:
1. Prescription Medications: Topical retinoids, antibiotics, or hormonal treatments (like birth control pills) can be effective for persistent acne.

2. Chemical Peels: These can help exfoliate the skin and reduce acne lesions.

3. Laser Therapy: Certain laser treatments can reduce acne and improve the appearance of scars.

4. Microneedling: This procedure can help improve the texture of your skin and reduce the appearance of acne scars.

Addressing Acne Scars
For existing acne scars, topical treatments like retinoids can promote skin cell turnover and improve texture. Additionally, professional treatments such as chemical peels, laser therapy, or microneedling can be very effective in reducing the appearance of scars.

Conclusion
Managing acne is a journey that often requires a combination of lifestyle changes, a consistent skincare routine, and possibly professional intervention. It’s essential to be patient and give your skin time to respond to new treatments. If you find that your acne persists despite these efforts, seeking help from a dermatologist can provide you with tailored solutions that address your specific skin concerns. Remember, you are not alone in this struggle, and effective solutions are available.
