Numbness and weakness in the hands and feet?
Hello Dr.
Lan, I have been experiencing persistent numbness in both my palms and the soles of my feet for the past month.
Recently, I have also occasionally felt muscle weakness in my arms and calves.
The numbness fluctuates, and at times it spreads to my calves.
I had blood tests done previously, which showed no abnormalities.
What should I do, doctor? Thank you!

Hello! Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding the numbness and weakness in your hands and feet. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing intermittent numbness in your palms and soles, along with muscle weakness in your arms and calves. This can be quite distressing, and I understand your need for clarity and guidance.
Numbness and weakness in the extremities can arise from various underlying causes. Some common factors include:
1. Nerve Compression or Entrapment: Conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome (compression of the median nerve at the wrist) or ulnar nerve entrapment can lead to numbness and weakness in the hands. Similarly, conditions affecting the lumbar spine, like herniated discs, can compress nerves that innervate the legs, leading to symptoms in the feet and calves.
2. Peripheral Neuropathy: This condition involves damage to the peripheral nerves and can result from diabetes, vitamin deficiencies (especially B vitamins), alcohol abuse, or certain medications. Symptoms often include tingling, numbness, and weakness.
3. Circulatory Issues: Poor circulation due to vascular conditions can also cause numbness and weakness. This is often accompanied by coldness in the extremities or changes in skin color.
4. Multiple Sclerosis (MS): Although less common, MS can present with numbness and weakness due to demyelination of nerves in the central nervous system. This is usually accompanied by other neurological symptoms.
5. Anxiety and Stress: Psychological factors can also manifest physically, leading to sensations of numbness or weakness, particularly during periods of heightened anxiety.
Given that your blood tests returned normal, it may be beneficial to consider the following steps:
1. Consult a Specialist: I recommend seeing a neurologist who can perform a thorough examination and may suggest additional tests, such as nerve conduction studies or electromyography (EMG), to assess the function of your nerves and muscles.
2. Physical Therapy: Engaging in physical therapy can help strengthen the muscles and improve coordination, which may alleviate some of the weakness you are experiencing.
3. Lifestyle Modifications: Ensure you maintain a healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals, particularly B vitamins, which are crucial for nerve health. Regular exercise can also improve circulation and nerve function.
4. Posture and Ergonomics: Pay attention to your posture, especially if you spend long hours at a desk or using electronic devices. Poor ergonomics can contribute to nerve compression.
5. Stress Management: If anxiety is a contributing factor, consider techniques such as mindfulness, yoga, or counseling to help manage stress levels.
6. Follow-Up: Keep a symptom diary to track when the numbness and weakness occur, their duration, and any potential triggers. This information can be invaluable for your healthcare provider.
In conclusion, while your symptoms can be concerning, many potential causes are manageable with the right approach. It is essential to seek professional evaluation to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment. I wish you the best in your journey toward understanding and alleviating these symptoms. Take care!
