Lower back pain issues?
Hello, doctor.
When I press on the left lower back area near the waist, it causes some pain in the left side of my waist.
There are two painful spots (the area where I press and the area next to the left waist).
Could this be a kidney issue or a muscle problem? I'm also unsure whether to see a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner or a urologist.
I would appreciate your guidance.

Dr. Yan Sumei reply Traditional Chinese Medicine
Dear Mr.
Jian,
The slight pain in the left lower back near the waist could be related to kidney deficiency or a muscular issue.
It is recommended to first consult a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner for herbal medicine, tui na (Chinese therapeutic massage), or acupuncture.
If there is no improvement, consider seeing an orthopedic specialist for an X-ray to check for any lumbar spine issues.
If the lumbar spine is normal and you want to confirm whether it is a kidney problem, then consult a nephrologist.
Wishing you health and safety!
Sincerely,
Yen Su-Mei

More Info
Lower back pain is a common issue that can arise from various causes, including muscular strain, structural problems, or even underlying medical conditions. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), lower back pain is often associated with the concepts of "Qi" (vital energy), "Blood," and the health of the kidneys, which are believed to play a crucial role in the body's overall vitality and strength.
From your description, the pain you experience when pressing on the left side of your lower back could be attributed to several factors. In TCM, the kidneys are considered the source of "Yin" and "Yang," and they govern the bones and the lower back. A deficiency in kidney energy, often referred to as "kidney deficiency" or "kidney Yang deficiency," can manifest as lower back pain, weakness, and fatigue. This condition is often characterized by symptoms such as cold intolerance, fatigue, and a feeling of weakness in the lower back.
On the other hand, if the pain is localized and exacerbated by pressure, it may indicate a muscular issue, such as a strain or sprain. Muscular pain can result from overexertion, poor posture, or sudden movements. In TCM, this type of pain is often categorized as "stagnation of Qi and Blood," which can lead to local inflammation and discomfort.
To determine whether your pain is related to kidney deficiency or a muscular issue, a thorough examination by a qualified healthcare provider is essential. In TCM, practitioners often use a combination of observation, palpation, and inquiry to assess the underlying causes of pain. They may also consider your overall health, lifestyle, and any additional symptoms you may be experiencing.
Regarding your question about whether to see a TCM practitioner or a urologist, it largely depends on the nature of your symptoms. If you suspect that your pain may be related to kidney function or if you have other urinary symptoms (such as changes in urination, pain during urination, or blood in the urine), it would be prudent to consult a urologist. They can perform necessary tests to rule out any underlying medical conditions affecting the kidneys or urinary tract.
Conversely, if your primary concern is the pain itself and you believe it may be related to muscle strain or tension, visiting a TCM practitioner could be beneficial. TCM treatments may include acupuncture, herbal medicine, and dietary recommendations aimed at restoring balance to your body's energy and alleviating pain.
In summary, lower back pain can stem from various causes, and understanding whether it is related to kidney health or muscular issues requires a comprehensive evaluation. Both TCM and Western medicine offer valuable insights and treatment options. If you are experiencing persistent pain, it is advisable to seek professional medical advice to determine the most appropriate course of action. Combining both approaches may also provide a more holistic treatment plan, addressing both the symptoms and the underlying causes of your discomfort.
