Am I pregnant?

Hello, I took abortion pills last month when I was about ten weeks pregnant, but I don't know what medication the doctor provided.
My period, which is usually around the 20th of the month, is late by several days.
Recently, I've experienced slight breast engorgement and nausea (which were similar symptoms I had when I first discovered I was pregnant).
I had sexual intercourse before the 20th.
Is it possible that I could be pregnant again?

Niming, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/02/27

Hello, the questioner: Since it is not possible to determine pregnancy based solely on subjective symptoms, it is advisable to consult a gynecologist to check for hormonal imbalances or early pregnancy.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Zhang.

After undergoing a medical abortion, it is understandable to have concerns about the possibility of becoming pregnant again, especially if you are experiencing symptoms such as breast tenderness and nausea, which are common early signs of pregnancy. Given your situation, let's break down the factors that could indicate whether you might be pregnant.

Firstly, it is important to note that after an abortion, your menstrual cycle may take some time to regulate. It is not uncommon for periods to be delayed or irregular for a few months following the procedure. This can be due to hormonal adjustments in your body as it returns to its pre-pregnancy state. Therefore, a delayed period alone does not definitively indicate pregnancy.

However, if you have had unprotected sexual intercourse after your abortion, there is a possibility of becoming pregnant again. The timing of ovulation can vary, and it is possible to ovulate as soon as two weeks after an abortion, which means that if you had sexual intercourse around that time, conception could occur. The symptoms you are experiencing, such as breast tenderness and nausea, could be indicative of pregnancy, but they can also be attributed to hormonal changes following the abortion or even premenstrual symptoms.

To determine if you are pregnant, the most reliable method is to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are designed to detect the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in your urine, which is produced shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. It is recommended to wait until at least the first day of your missed period to take the test for the most accurate result. If you take the test too early, it may yield a false negative result.

If the home pregnancy test is positive, it is advisable to schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider for further evaluation. They may perform a blood test to confirm the pregnancy and check your hCG levels, which can provide additional information about the viability of the pregnancy. If the test is negative and your period still does not arrive, it would be wise to consult your doctor to rule out any underlying issues.

In summary, while it is possible to become pregnant shortly after an abortion, the symptoms you are experiencing could also be related to hormonal changes or other factors. Taking a home pregnancy test and consulting with your healthcare provider will provide clarity on your situation. Remember to prioritize your health and well-being during this time, and do not hesitate to reach out to a medical professional for guidance and support.
