A hard growth on the ear bone?
Hello doctor, I regularly develop hard substances on my ear canal that I can scrape off.
After scraping, they resemble earwax, but it hurts when I scrape them! If it's earwax, why does it hurt so much when I scrape it? Why does earwax form on the ear canal like a hard little stone, and why is it yellow? Thank you, doctor!

It is recommended to seek medical examination and treatment.
Wishing you safety and health.

Understanding painful bumps on the ear can be quite complex, as there are several potential causes for the symptoms you are experiencing. Based on your description of hard bumps that can be removed but cause pain when touched, it is essential to consider a few possibilities.
Firstly, the bumps you are encountering could be a form of earwax buildup, also known as cerumen. While earwax is a natural substance produced by glands in the ear canal to protect the ear from dust, debris, and microorganisms, excessive buildup can lead to blockages. When you attempt to remove this buildup, it can cause discomfort or pain, especially if the wax is impacted against the sensitive skin of the ear canal or if it has hardened significantly. The yellowish color you mentioned is typical of earwax, but if it is hard and painful, it may indicate that it has been in place for some time.
Another possibility is the presence of a condition known as external otitis, or swimmer's ear, which is an infection of the outer ear canal. This condition can lead to swelling, redness, and the formation of painful bumps. If the bumps are tender and inflamed, it may be indicative of an infection rather than just wax buildup. In such cases, the pain can be exacerbated by touching the area or attempting to remove any material.
Additionally, you might be experiencing seborrheic keratosis or other benign skin growths. These can appear as hard, raised bumps on the skin, including the ear. While they are generally harmless, they can sometimes become irritated or inflamed, leading to discomfort when touched.
If the bumps are recurrent and painful, it is advisable to consult with an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination of your ear canal and eardrum, potentially using an otoscope to visualize the area more clearly. This examination will help determine whether the bumps are due to wax buildup, an infection, or another dermatological condition.
In the meantime, here are some general recommendations to manage your symptoms:
1. Avoid Inserting Objects into the Ear: It is crucial not to use cotton swabs or other objects to clean your ears, as this can push wax further into the canal and cause impaction.
2. Warm Compress: Applying a warm compress to the outer ear may help alleviate some discomfort and promote drainage if there is any swelling.
3. Over-the-Counter Pain Relief: If the pain is bothersome, consider taking over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, following the recommended dosages.
4. Hydration and Humidity: Keeping your body well-hydrated and using a humidifier can help maintain moisture in the ear canal, potentially preventing excessive wax buildup.
5. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from irritants such as hairsprays, perfumes, or other products that may come into contact with your ears.
In conclusion, while the symptoms you describe could be related to earwax buildup, they may also indicate an underlying condition that requires medical attention. A visit to an ENT specialist will provide you with a clearer diagnosis and appropriate treatment options. Remember, taking care of your ear health is essential, especially if you are experiencing pain or discomfort.
