Post-hemorrhoid ligation?

I have undergone rubber band ligation for hemorrhoids four days ago, and I still feel quite a bit of pain when walking or sitting.
When I touch the area, I can still feel the hemorrhoids.
Should I push them back in, or will they fall off after some time? How many days will it take for the pain to subside? Also, is it normal to see some blood and water when wiping after a bowel movement? Thank you for your response, doctor.

Kuo, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/03/02

Dr. Yu Mingchang reply Surgery

More Info

After undergoing band ligation for hemorrhoids, it's common to experience pain and discomfort in the days following the procedure. Typically, patients report varying levels of pain, which can be exacerbated by activities such as walking or sitting. The pain you are experiencing four days post-procedure is not unusual, as the area is healing and the ligation site may still be inflamed.

Understanding the Healing Process
When hemorrhoids are treated with band ligation, the rubber band is placed around the base of the hemorrhoid to cut off its blood supply. Over time, the tissue will die and eventually fall off, usually within a week or two. During this process, it is normal to feel some discomfort, and you may still feel the presence of the hemorrhoid as it has not yet fallen off. It is important not to attempt to push the hemorrhoid back in, as this can cause further irritation or injury.

Pain Management
For pain management, over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen can be helpful. If your pain is severe, you should consult your healthcare provider for stronger pain relief options. Additionally, warm sitz baths can provide comfort and help soothe the area.

Bleeding and Discomfort
Regarding the slight bleeding you mentioned after bowel movements, some blood and discharge can be expected as the area heals. However, if you notice significant bleeding or if the bleeding does not subside, it is crucial to contact your healthcare provider. They can assess whether this is part of the normal healing process or if there is a complication that needs to be addressed.

When to Expect Improvement
Most patients begin to notice a decrease in pain within a week after the procedure, but this can vary based on individual healing rates and the extent of the hemorrhoids treated. If your pain persists beyond two weeks or worsens, it is advisable to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may want to evaluate the site to ensure that there are no complications, such as infection or retained tissue.

Follow-Up Care
It is essential to maintain follow-up appointments with your healthcare provider to monitor your recovery. They can provide guidance on dietary changes, such as increasing fiber intake and hydration, which can help prevent constipation and reduce strain during bowel movements, further aiding in your recovery.

Conclusion
In summary, while the pain and discomfort you are experiencing after band ligation for hemorrhoids are common, it is essential to manage your symptoms effectively and monitor your recovery. If you have any concerns about your symptoms or the healing process, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice and support. They can provide reassurance and help ensure that your recovery proceeds smoothly.
