Leg length discrepancy caused by growth plate issues?

Hello doctor, I am currently 25 years old.
The growth plate in my right leg has already closed, but the one in my left leg has not.
I previously consulted a doctor who told me that it would close, but it has been over two years now and it still hasn't closed.
I am now experiencing a leg length discrepancy, although I am unsure of the exact difference.
I would like to ask you, if the growth plate does not close, will the discrepancy in leg length continue to increase? Is there any way to promote the closure of the growth plate?

Hello: It is very rare for a 25-year-old to have unclosed growth plates; most males typically close them by age 18.
It is important to confirm whether the growth plates are indeed still open.
If they are not closed, surgical intervention may be necessary.
Thank you!

Understanding limb length discrepancy, particularly when it involves growth plate issues, is a complex topic that requires a thorough understanding of human anatomy and growth patterns. In your case, it appears that you are experiencing a discrepancy in the closure of the growth plates in your legs, which can lead to a condition known as limb length discrepancy (LLD).
To address your first concern, if the growth plate in your right leg has closed while the left leg's growth plate remains open, it is possible that the left leg may continue to grow while the right leg will not. Growth plates, also known as epiphyseal plates, are areas of developing cartilage tissue near the ends of long bones. They are responsible for the lengthening of bones during childhood and adolescence. Once these plates close, which typically occurs after puberty, the bones can no longer grow in length.
In your situation, if the left leg's growth plate remains open, it could potentially lead to an increasing discrepancy in leg length over time. The rate of growth can vary significantly among individuals, and while some may experience continued growth into their late teens or early twenties, others may not. If the growth plate on the left leg remains open, it could continue to grow, but the extent of this growth is unpredictable and can be influenced by various factors, including genetics, nutrition, and overall health.

As for your question about whether there are methods to promote the closure of the growth plate, it is important to note that growth plate closure is a natural biological process that is largely governed by hormonal changes in the body, particularly the onset of puberty. There are no medically approved methods to artificially induce the closure of growth plates. However, if there are concerns about the growth plate's status, it is essential to consult with an orthopedic specialist who can provide a thorough evaluation and possibly recommend imaging studies, such as X-rays, to assess the growth plates' condition.

If you are experiencing significant discomfort or functional limitations due to the limb length discrepancy, there are surgical options available. These may include limb lengthening procedures or corrective osteotomies, which can help to address the difference in leg length. However, these procedures come with their own risks and considerations, and a detailed discussion with an orthopedic surgeon specializing in limb length discrepancies would be necessary to determine the best course of action for your specific situation.

In summary, if your left leg's growth plate remains open while the right leg's has closed, it is likely that the discrepancy in leg length may increase over time. Consulting with a healthcare professional who specializes in orthopedic issues is crucial for proper assessment and to explore potential treatment options. They can provide personalized advice based on your growth patterns, overall health, and lifestyle factors.
