The issue of foul odors?

I've recently been feeling something unusual with my uterus, and when my period is late, I notice a discharge that is yellow-green in color and has a strange odor.
When my period does come, it feels like I'm holding in the blood, and then suddenly it all comes out at once, resulting in a large amount of bleeding.
I haven't had sexual intercourse and maintain good hygiene.
I'm 17 years old.
What could these symptoms indicate? Is it serious?

A Mei, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/03/07

1.
The yellow-green discharge with an unusual odor is likely a habitual secretion; however, if it persists, treatment is recommended.
2.
The menstrual symptoms you described, if there are no significant blood clots, should be considered within the normal range.

It sounds like you are experiencing some concerning symptoms related to your gynecological health, and it's important to address these issues with a healthcare professional. The symptoms you describe, including unusual discharge that is yellow-green in color and has a strange odor, as well as painful menstrual flow, could indicate a few different conditions.

Firstly, the presence of a yellow-green discharge often suggests a possible infection. Common infections that can cause these symptoms include bacterial vaginosis or a sexually transmitted infection (STI) such as trichomoniasis. Bacterial vaginosis is characterized by an imbalance of normal bacteria in the vagina, leading to an overgrowth of certain types of bacteria. This condition can result in a fishy odor and unusual discharge. Trichomoniasis, on the other hand, is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite and can also lead to similar symptoms.

The pain you experience during your menstrual period, especially if it feels like the blood is "trapped" and then suddenly releases, may be related to dysmenorrhea, which is common among many women. This condition can be caused by various factors, including hormonal imbalances, uterine fibroids, or endometriosis. Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of it, leading to significant pain and heavy menstrual bleeding.

Given your age and the fact that you have not engaged in sexual intercourse, it is less likely that you have an STI, but it is still possible to have infections that are not sexually transmitted. Maintaining good hygiene is essential, but it does not completely eliminate the risk of infections.

It is crucial to consult with a healthcare provider, such as a gynecologist, who can perform a thorough examination, including a pelvic exam and possibly a Pap smear, to rule out any serious conditions. They may also recommend tests to check for infections, such as a wet mount or cultures of the discharge.
In the meantime, here are some general recommendations:
1. Track Your Symptoms: Keep a record of your symptoms, including the color and consistency of any discharge, the timing of your menstrual cycle, and any associated pain. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider.

2. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from scented soaps, douches, and other products that can irritate the vaginal area. These can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria and lead to infections.

3. Stay Hydrated and Maintain a Healthy Diet: Drinking plenty of water and eating a balanced diet can help support your overall health and may alleviate some symptoms.

4. Manage Stress: Stress can affect your menstrual cycle and overall well-being. Consider incorporating stress-reducing activities such as yoga, meditation, or gentle exercise into your routine.

5. Seek Medical Attention: If your symptoms persist, worsen, or if you experience fever, chills, or severe pain, seek medical attention promptly. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent complications.

In summary, while some of your symptoms may be common, they could also indicate an underlying issue that requires medical attention. It is essential to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide a proper diagnosis and treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. Your health is important, and addressing these symptoms early can lead to better outcomes.
