The left and right armpits are different?
Recently, I noticed a slight protrusion under my right armpit that is not very obvious.
It looks the same color as my skin and feels soft to the touch.
It doesn't hurt, and my left side is normal! I'm really worried that it might be swollen lymph nodes!

Dear Sir,
Thank you for your inquiry.
Regarding your recent observation of a slightly prominent area under your right armpit, which appears to match the skin color and feels soft to the touch, it is possible that this may be fatty tissue.
Typically, if it were an enlarged lymph node, there would be tenderness upon pressure.
It could potentially be a benign lipoma, but a physical examination is necessary for a definitive assessment.
I recommend consulting a breast surgeon for further evaluation.
If you wish to come to our hospital for examination, we can assist in arranging an appointment at Changhua Hospital for your care.
Sincerely,
Dr.

When you notice an uneven appearance in your armpits, particularly with a soft, non-painful lump on one side, it can understandably cause concern regarding potential lymph node issues. Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped structures that are part of the lymphatic system, which plays a crucial role in your immune response. They can become enlarged due to various reasons, including infections, inflammation, or malignancies. However, it’s important to remember that not all lumps or swellings in the armpit area are indicative of serious health issues.
In your case, the lump you described as soft and not painful could be a benign lymph node or even a lipoma, which is a benign tumor made of fat tissue. Lymph nodes can vary in size and consistency, and it is not uncommon for one side to appear slightly different from the other. Many people have asymmetrical lymph nodes, and they can fluctuate in size due to various factors, including recent infections or even physical activity.
Here are some key points to consider regarding your situation:
1. Characteristics of Lymph Nodes: Lymph nodes that are reactive (enlarged due to infection or inflammation) are often soft and tender. In contrast, malignant lymph nodes may feel hard, fixed, and may be associated with other symptoms such as weight loss, night sweats, or fever. Since your lump is soft and not painful, it is less likely to be malignant.
2. Common Causes of Lymph Node Enlargement: Enlarged lymph nodes can be caused by infections (like a cold or flu), localized infections (such as a skin infection), or systemic conditions (like autoimmune diseases). If you have had any recent infections or illnesses, this could explain the change.
3. When to Seek Medical Attention: If the lump persists, increases in size, or if you develop additional symptoms (such as fever, night sweats, or unexplained weight loss), it would be prudent to consult a healthcare professional. They may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound, or a biopsy if there is concern about the nature of the lump.
4. Self-Examination and Monitoring: It’s a good practice to monitor any changes in the lump over time. If it remains stable and does not cause discomfort, it may not require immediate intervention. However, keeping track of any changes is essential.
5. Consulting a Healthcare Provider: If you remain concerned about the lump, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a physical examination and may recommend further tests to rule out any serious conditions. Depending on the findings, they might refer you to a specialist, such as an oncologist or a surgeon, for further evaluation.
In summary, while it’s natural to worry about changes in your body, especially concerning lymph nodes, many factors can contribute to their appearance. The characteristics you described suggest that it may not be a cause for alarm, but professional evaluation is always the best course of action if you have concerns. Regular check-ups and being aware of your body’s changes are key components of maintaining your health.
