Dr. Zhuang Yihui reply Traditional Chinese Medicine

Symptoms such as dry or burning throat, sticky phlegm, chest tightness, a sensation of obstruction or foreign body in the throat, and hoarseness are indicative of chronic pharyngitis.
Long-term observation of patients with chronic pharyngitis reveals that they often experience dry throat, unquenchable thirst, and are prone to voice loss or hoarseness after excessive talking, fatigue, or consuming spicy foods.
The tongue may appear red with little moisture, and in severe cases, the tongue body may become thin with fine cracks.
This syndrome is referred to in Traditional Chinese Medicine as "Yin Deficiency with Excess Heat." However, due to insufficient symptom description, a proper differentiation and treatment cannot be made, nor can a prescription be provided.
Therefore, the following dietary recommendations are suggested:
1.
Watermelon: Known as "Heavenly White Tiger Decoction," the inner part of the fruit can generate fluids and quench thirst.
The truly cooling part of the watermelon is the white flesh near the rind, referred to as "Watermelon Green Skin" in TCM.
In hot weather, excessive sweating can lead to heat and dry throat pain; fresh watermelon can be added to decoctions for its strong fluid-generating properties.
2.
Pears: Used for heat-induced fluid damage, thirst, and red tongue with little coating, it is known as "Heavenly Sweet Dew Drink."
3.
Raw olives and white radish: Both can be boiled in water and used as a tea substitute, serving as an auxiliary treatment for acute and chronic throat swelling, pain, and ulceration.
They are neutral in nature and can be consumed long-term without adverse effects.
4.
Loofah and celery: For acute throat swelling and pain, increased consumption is recommended for better results.
Thank you!

Chronic sore throat can be a frustrating and painful condition, and while Western medicine often relies on over-the-counter pain relievers and throat lozenges, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers a holistic approach that may provide relief. In TCM, the treatment of a sore throat is based on the underlying cause, which can vary from person to person. Therefore, it is essential to consult a qualified TCM practitioner for a personalized diagnosis and treatment plan.

In TCM, a sore throat can be attributed to several factors, including wind-heat invasion, yin deficiency, or phlegm-heat accumulation. Each of these conditions requires a different herbal approach:
1. Wind-Heat Invasion: This is often characterized by symptoms such as a sore throat, fever, headache, and a red tongue with a thin yellow coating. Common herbs used to treat this condition include:
- Sang Ye (Mulberry Leaf): Known for its cooling properties, it helps to clear heat and relieve sore throat.

- Ju Hua (Chrysanthemum Flower): This herb is also cooling and can help reduce inflammation and clear heat.

- Lian Qiao (Forsythia Fruit): Often used to expel wind-heat and relieve sore throat.

2. Yin Deficiency: Symptoms may include a dry throat, night sweats, and a red tongue with little coating. For this condition, TCM practitioners may recommend:
- Bai He (Lily Bulb): Known for its moistening properties, it can help soothe a dry throat.

- Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon Root): This herb nourishes yin and moistens dryness, making it beneficial for a chronic sore throat.

- Gua Lou (Trichosanthes Fruit): It helps to clear heat and phlegm while also moistening the throat.

3. Phlegm-Heat Accumulation: Symptoms may include a sore throat with a thick yellow coating on the tongue and a feeling of fullness in the throat. Herbs that may be used include:
- Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber): This herb helps to transform phlegm and relieve throat discomfort.

- Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root): Known for its ability to clear heat and dry dampness, it can be effective in treating phlegm-heat conditions.

- Chen Pi (Dried Tangerine Peel): This herb helps to regulate qi and resolve phlegm.

In addition to herbal remedies, TCM may also incorporate acupuncture and dietary recommendations to support recovery. For example, avoiding spicy, fried, or overly hot foods can help prevent irritation of the throat. Instead, consuming warm, soothing foods like congee or herbal teas can be beneficial.

As for the duration of treatment, it varies depending on the individual's condition and response to the herbs. Some patients may notice improvement within a few days, while others may require several weeks of treatment. Regular follow-up with a TCM practitioner is essential to adjust the treatment plan as needed.

In conclusion, TCM offers a variety of herbal solutions for chronic sore throat, tailored to the individual's specific condition. It is crucial to seek professional guidance from a qualified TCM practitioner to ensure safe and effective treatment. By addressing the root cause of the sore throat, TCM can provide a holistic approach to relief and recovery.
