Multiple bowel movements in the morning with mild discomfort upon palpation of the left abdomen?
I had bowel movements about three times in the morning, with fewer in the afternoon and evening.
Sometimes the stool has stripes, and the first one or two bowel movements are larger and bulkier, while the later ones are smaller and thinner.
There is no blood in the stool, but I feel slight discomfort when pressing on my left abdomen.
I previously consulted a doctor who diagnosed me with irritable bowel syndrome and said that a colonoscopy was not necessary because I tend to be anxious.
However, I am still worried about the possibility of having colon cancer.
Based on the above situation, do you think I might have cancer?

Frequent morning bowel movements can be concerning, especially when there is a family history of colon cancer or when there are changes in bowel habits. However, it is essential to differentiate between normal variations in bowel habits and symptoms that may indicate a more serious condition, such as colorectal cancer.
Based on your description, having three bowel movements in the morning, with the first one being larger and subsequent ones being smaller and softer, is not uncommon. Many people experience variations in their bowel habits due to factors such as diet, hydration, stress, and overall gastrointestinal health. The presence of "banding" or changes in the shape of the stool can sometimes be attributed to dietary factors or the way the stool is formed in the intestines.
Your mention of slight discomfort in the left abdomen and your history of being a nervous person suggests that stress and anxiety could be playing a significant role in your bowel habits. Stress can lead to increased gastrointestinal motility, which may explain why you feel the need to have multiple bowel movements in the morning. This condition is often referred to as "nervous bowel syndrome" or "irritable bowel syndrome" (IBS), which is characterized by changes in bowel habits, abdominal discomfort, and sometimes bloating.
Regarding your concerns about colon cancer, it is important to note that early-stage colorectal cancer often does not present with clear symptoms. Common symptoms of colorectal cancer can include changes in bowel habits, blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, and persistent abdominal discomfort. However, the absence of blood in your stool and the fact that your symptoms have been attributed to IBS by a healthcare professional are reassuring signs.
Given your family history of colon cancer, it is understandable to have heightened concerns. Family history can increase your risk, but it does not guarantee that you will develop the disease. The general recommendation for individuals with a family history of colorectal cancer is to begin screening earlier than the standard age of 45, often around 10 years before the age at which the youngest affected family member was diagnosed.
If your symptoms persist or worsen, or if you develop new symptoms such as significant weight loss, persistent abdominal pain, or changes in the consistency of your stool, it would be prudent to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may recommend a colonoscopy or other diagnostic tests to rule out any serious conditions, including colorectal cancer.
In summary, while your symptoms may be related to stress and IBS, it is essential to remain vigilant, especially with your family history. Regular screenings and open communication with your healthcare provider about your symptoms and concerns are key to maintaining your gastrointestinal health. Additionally, incorporating stress management techniques, a balanced diet rich in fiber, and staying hydrated can help improve your bowel health and overall well-being.
