Side effects of Diane 35?
Hello! My family doctor recommended Diane 35 for treating acne, but another doctor told me that taking this medication could have side effects, including weight gain of over ten pounds.
Is this true? How many people experience such significant side effects? Does weight gain occur while taking the medication, or only after stopping it? Are there any other major side effects? My family doctor said there wouldn't be significant side effects, and when I asked about the likelihood of weight gain, he said it was very unlikely.
However, the other doctor claimed that weight gain of over ten pounds is almost certain.
Which doctor is correct? Thank you for your response!

Dr. Chen Yiying reply Dermatology
Hello, in response to your question: Diane-35 is primarily a contraceptive pill that also has effects in treating acne.
Common side effects include breast tenderness, headaches, nausea and vomiting, weight changes, and allergic reactions, but the incidence of these side effects is not very high.
Regarding your concern about weight, a study published in Canada in 1990 involving over 70 patients who used the medication for six months to a year showed no statistically significant changes in weight.
Even if there were changes, they were mostly within the range of 1 to 2 kilograms, and it does not necessarily lead to weight gain.
If you still have concerns, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist.

More Info
Diane 35 is a medication that combines cyproterone acetate and ethinyl estradiol, primarily used as a contraceptive and for treating conditions like acne. Your concerns regarding weight gain and side effects are valid, as these are common topics of discussion among patients considering hormonal treatments.
Firstly, regarding weight gain, it is important to note that individual responses to medications can vary significantly. While some users report weight changes, studies have shown that the average weight gain associated with Diane 35 is not substantial. For instance, a study conducted in Canada indicated that among over 70 patients using the medication for six months to a year, there were no statistically significant changes in weight. Most weight fluctuations, when they occurred, were within a range of about 1-2 kilograms (approximately 2-4 pounds), which is not the dramatic increase of 10 pounds that some may fear.
The concerns about weight gain can stem from the hormonal changes that occur when taking birth control pills. Hormonal contraceptives can influence fluid retention, appetite, and metabolism, which may lead some individuals to perceive weight gain. However, it is not accurate to say that everyone will experience significant weight gain. The likelihood of weight gain varies from person to person, and many factors, including diet, lifestyle, and genetic predisposition, play a role in how one’s body responds to hormonal treatments.
As for the timing of weight changes, it is possible for some individuals to experience weight gain while on the medication, but it is less common for this to occur after discontinuation. If weight gain does occur, it is often during the period of active use rather than after stopping the medication.
In addition to weight gain, Diane 35 can have other side effects. Common side effects include breast tenderness, headaches, nausea, and mood changes. More serious risks, although rare, include blood clots, especially in individuals who smoke or have other risk factors. It is crucial to discuss your complete medical history with your healthcare provider to assess your risk for these side effects.
If you are concerned about the side effects or the potential for weight gain, it may be beneficial to consult with a dermatologist or a healthcare provider who specializes in hormonal treatments. They can provide personalized advice based on your health history and specific concerns. Additionally, if you experience any unusual symptoms or side effects while taking Diane 35, it is essential to report these to your doctor promptly.
Ultimately, the decision to use Diane 35 should be made collaboratively with your healthcare provider, weighing the benefits of acne treatment against the potential risks and side effects. If you feel uncertain or uncomfortable with the information provided by your doctors, seeking a second opinion or further clarification can help you make an informed decision about your treatment options.
