May I ask the doctor?
In the past, I have always had dandruff, and the skin on either side of my nose has been dry.
A doctor informed me that I have seborrheic dermatitis.
I have seen a doctor and used Renshan Lishu shampoo, which has somewhat controlled the condition.
However, recently, my dandruff has worsened significantly, making me feel extremely uncomfortable and frustrated.
I have large patches of flakes that, when I scratch, sometimes bleed, and my scalp is very dry.
Additionally, I have noticed small bumps on my scalp.
I would like to ask the doctor:
1.
Is this simply dandruff?
2.
Could other organ dysfunctions or diseases cause such severe dandruff?
3.
Could the doctor recommend any professional websites or books on this topic? Thank you.

If you have already been examined by a dermatologist, it is likely seborrheic dermatitis.
Seborrheic dermatitis cannot be completely cured.
Some researchers believe that Malassezia yeast may be one of the causes of seborrheic dermatitis.
Additionally, factors such as staying up late, insomnia, fatigue, high stress, smoking, drinking alcohol, and illness can exacerbate seborrheic dermatitis.

More Info
Seborrheic dermatitis is a common skin condition characterized by red, flaky, and itchy patches, primarily affecting areas rich in sebaceous (oil) glands, such as the scalp, face, and upper back. It can manifest as dandruff on the scalp, and in more severe cases, it can lead to crusty, inflamed patches on the skin. Understanding the causes, symptoms, and treatment options for seborrheic dermatitis can help manage this condition effectively.
Causes of Seborrheic Dermatitis
The exact cause of seborrheic dermatitis is not fully understood, but several factors are believed to contribute to its development:
1. Malassezia Yeast: This fungus is naturally present on the skin and may proliferate in individuals with seborrheic dermatitis, leading to inflammation and skin irritation.
2. Sebum Production: Increased oil production can create an environment conducive to the growth of Malassezia, exacerbating the condition.
3. Genetics: A family history of seborrheic dermatitis or other skin conditions can increase susceptibility.
4. Environmental Factors: Stress, fatigue, hormonal changes, and weather conditions (such as cold, dry air) can trigger or worsen symptoms.
5. Underlying Health Conditions: Conditions such as Parkinson's disease, HIV/AIDS, and other immune system disorders can increase the risk of developing seborrheic dermatitis.
Symptoms
Symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis can vary in severity and may include:
- Flaky, white or yellowish scales on the scalp (dandruff)
- Red, greasy patches on the skin
- Itching or burning sensations
- Inflammation and swelling in affected areas
- Crusty or scaly patches on the face, particularly around the nose, eyebrows, and ears
Treatment Options
While seborrheic dermatitis cannot be completely cured, it can be effectively managed with various treatment options:
1. Medicated Shampoos: Over-the-counter shampoos containing ingredients like zinc pyrithione, ketoconazole, salicylic acid, or coal tar can help reduce flaking and inflammation. It's essential to follow the instructions and allow the shampoo to sit on the scalp for a few minutes before rinsing.
2. Topical Treatments: Corticosteroid creams or ointments can help reduce inflammation and itching. However, these should be used sparingly and under the guidance of a healthcare provider to avoid potential side effects.
3. Lifestyle Modifications: Managing stress, maintaining a healthy diet, and ensuring proper skin hygiene can help reduce flare-ups. Regular washing of the scalp and skin can help remove excess oil and scales.
4. Consultation with a Dermatologist: If symptoms persist or worsen, it is crucial to seek professional medical advice. A dermatologist can provide tailored treatment plans and may prescribe stronger medications if necessary.
Resources for Further Information
For those seeking more information on seborrheic dermatitis, several reputable resources are available:
- American Academy of Dermatology (AAD): The AAD provides comprehensive information on various skin conditions, including seborrheic dermatitis.
- National Eczema Association: This organization offers resources and support for individuals with eczema and related skin conditions.
- DermNet NZ: A valuable resource for dermatological information, including detailed articles on seborrheic dermatitis.
In conclusion, seborrheic dermatitis is a manageable condition that can significantly impact quality of life if left untreated. Understanding its causes, symptoms, and treatment options is essential for effective management. If you are experiencing severe symptoms, such as bleeding or worsening flakes, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation and personalized treatment plan.
